VI. Read and memorize the following words and word combinations:

campus – кампус, территория (университета, колледжа или школы); competitive entry requirements – конкурсные требования для поступления; to be held – состояться; to apply for – подавать заявление, обращаться; ranked among – ранжирован (упорядочен) среди; to employ – иметь в штате, предоставлять работу; to supply with all necessary facilities – снабжать всеми необходимыми средствами; to deliver – читать (лекции), extracurricular – факультативный, внеаудиторный; part-time – вечернее (обучение), extra-mural – заочное (обучение); to be engaged in – быть вовлеченным, заниматься, dormitory – общежитие.

Обратите внимание на чтение следующих числительных. Числительные, которые употребляются с неопределенным артиклем: 100 – a (one) hundred, 1,000 – a (one) thousand, 1,000,000 – a (one) million.

Чтение сложных числительных: 109 – one hundred and nine; 694 – six hundred and ninety-four; in 1982 (nineteen eighty-two).

Russia’s Top Universities have very competitive entry requirements. Special exams are held annually to determine admission. Students must apply for studies according to the standard competitive system. Most of Russia’s Universities are located in large cities: Moscow State University, the Russian People’s Friendship University in Moscow, St. Petersburg State University. All these universities are public (state).

Lomonosov Moscow State University is the oldest and the most prestigious university of Russia. It was founded in 1755 on Saint Tatiana’s Day at the decree of the Empress Elizaveta and on the initiative of the great Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov. The day of Moscow University’s foundation is celebrated as the Student’s Day in Russia. Moscow State University nowadays offers education in 27 faculties and research training in a number of institutes. A number of its graduates and professors are Nobel Prize winners and are considered world famous scientist. The University is internationally recognized and ranked among the top ten in the world.

The total number of university students including post-graduates exceeds 30,000. The university employs 8,500 professors, academicians, experienced lecturers and researchers. Most of them are engaged in research in various fields of science, about 6,9000 of them hold Doctor of Science Degree. The number of foreign students is growing constantly (3,000 students from about 100 countries).The teaching staff is highly qualified and world recognized for their achievements in modern science. The Diploma of Moscow State University is recognized worldwide. The university closely cooperates with the leading international organizations including UNESCO and The World Bank.

The main building of the university has exceptional architecture and it is the largest and highest university building throughout the world. The university campus supplies the students with all necessary facilities: lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, conference hall, clinics, pharmacy, shops, movie theatre, post office, dining halls, dormitories. It includes 12 training halls, 2 swimming pools, tennis courts, football stadiums and other sport facilities.

Libraries have a rich collection of books in Russian and in many foreign languages with titles in every branch of science and technology. Prescribed textbooks and manuals are available for staff and students who can consult them or borrow. The library has many electronic journal titles licensed for access on the network and full-text online databases. Nowadays the library has websites, which include useful information about collections of items.

Each faculty is headed by a dean who is usually an outstanding scientist. He is assisted by several deputy deans who are responsible for academic process, research, extracurricular activity, students’ accommodation. The dean’s office coordinates the faculty activities, arranges curriculum, sets exam and credit schedule for every term.

Moscow State University provides a wide range of educational programs. Almost all programmes at the university are delivered in the Russian language. The university provides tuition in three forms: full-time, part-time, and extra-mural instruction. Nowadays e-learning (distance education) is getting more and more popular. For many students the tuition is free and they receive a scholarship.
