Чтение английских гласных букв в открытом положении
Открытым называется слог, оканчивающийся на гласную букву (I тип чтения). Гласные буквы в открытом положении произносятся следующим образом:
a – [ei], o – [оu], e – [i:], u – [ju:], i (y) – [ai].
Открытое положение встречается:
1. В алфавите. Гласные буквы a, i,y, о, е, u в алфавите графически открыты.
2. В конце односложных слов и при чтении некоторых согласных в алфавите. Например: nо [nou], so [sou], k [kei].
3.В сочетании: гласная + гласная (вторая гласная графически открывает первую). Например: meet [mi:t], goat [gout].
4. В сочетании: гласная + согласная + гласная. Вторая гласная (через согласную) обычно не произносится. Например: make [meik], stone [stoun]. Конечная гласная буква ‘e’ является в данном случае нечитаемой, «немой». Слог называется условно-открытым.

Чтение английских гласных букв в закрытом положении
Гласные буквы в закрытом положении произносятся следующим образом:
a – [æ], o – [ɔ], e – [е], u – [ʌ], i (y) – [i].
Закрытое положение (II тип чтения) встречается:
1. В сочетании: гласная + две согласных + гласная:hammer;
2. В сочетании: гласная + одна или несколько согласных в конце слова: nut.
