2. Гласная в открытом положении отражает краткий звук, если после нее следует буква v. Например: to live, to have, to give.
3. Если в конечном неударном слоге имеется буква i. Например: solid, static,

Сочетание ei или еу (последнее обычно в конце слова), как правило, отражают дифтонг [ei]. Например: eight, weight. Однако в некоторых словах еi, еу отражают, по обратной зависимости, дифтонг [ai]: eye, height.

Грамматика
Степени сравнения прилагательных и наречий (Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives and Adverbs)
Основная форма прилагательных и наречий – положительная степень. Формы сравнительной и превосходной степеней образуются обычно от формы положительной степени одним из двух способов.
Сравнительная степень односложных и некоторых двусложных прилагательных, которые оканчиваются на -y, -e, -er, -ow, и односложных и некоторых двусложных наречий образуется прибавлением суффикса -er:
tall (высокий) – taller (выше), strong (сильный) – stronger (сильнее), old (старый) – older (старше) / elder – если речь идет о членах одной семьи; fast (быстро) – faster (быстрее), hard (упорно) – harder (упорнее);
narrow (узкий) – narrower (более узкий), clever (умный) – cleverer (более умный), early (рано) – earlier (раньше).
Превосходная степень данного типа прилагательных и наречий образуется прибавлением суффикса -est: tallest (самый высокий), strongest (самый сильный), oldest / eldest (самый старший), fastest (быстрее всего), hardest (упорнее всех);
narrowest (самый узкий), cleverest (самый умный), earliest (раньше всех).
Если прилагательное или наречие оканчивается на –y, перед которой стоит согласная, то -y меняется на i: happy (счастливый) – happier (более счастливый) – happiest (самый счастливый).
Согласная удваивается в односложных прилагательных после краткого гласного: big (большой) – bigger (больше) – biggest (самый большой).
От прилагательных, которые состоят из двух и более слогов, а также наречия, оканчивающиеся на –ly, сравнительная степень образуется с помощью слова more, превосходная – most: famous (известный) – more famous (более известный) – most famous (самый известный);
interesting – more interesting – most interesting; beautifully (красиво) – more beautifully (более красиво) – most beautifully (красивее всех).
Перед прилагательным в превосходной степени ставится определенный артикль the.
