Security Procedures at the Airport

A major problem has arisen recently that may cause additional difficulty for the ground service agent at the airport. This is the matter of security procedures and searches. As a result of the airplane hijackings that were taking place with increasing frequency, almost all airports throughout the world instituted preboarding security checks for weapons and even, in some places, for potentially dangerous or demented persons. These procedures usually consist of a baggage search and some sort of a personal search for concealed weapons. In the United States, this is ordinarily done with an electronic metal detector; in Brazil which has very strict regulations, the passenger is actually frisked.

In almost all cases, the actual search is carried out by government agents rather than airline personnel. Nevertheless, ground service agents will be asked many questions about the security procedures – what the passengers are permitted to carry on board the aircraft, how long the search will take, and why the search is necessary. A few passengers will complain about it in no uncertain terms. The point that the agent must make, of course, is that the search is being made for the passenger’s own protection. Most passengers will readily accept this fact and endure the brief unpleasantness with good humor. And the fact is that security regulations have really worked. Hijackings have been cut to zero or near zero in the countries with the strictest regulations.
