Modern Airport

Any major airport has lots of customers, most of them are passengers. To meet passengers needs, an airport must:

• be accessible by roadways and public transportation, plus have plenty of parking

• keep passengers safe, offer food and other services

• maintain areas for the customs services

Airlines need space for airplanes, facilities for routine maintenance, jet fuel and places for passengers and flight crews while on the ground. Air freight companies need space for loading and unloading cargo airplanes. Pilots and other crew members need runways, aircraft fuel, air traffic information, facilities for aircraft storage and maintenance and places to relax on the ground.

Almost all airports have one thing in common – they are at some distance from the city that they serve. Getting to the airport usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more. Other than private automobiles, the passenger can get to most airports by public transportation - buses, subways and taxies. Buses and subways are usually inconvenient, especially for a passenger burdened with a load of baggage; taxies are often expensive. Therefore, many airlines have special bus or limousine service to carry the passengers to the airport.

The normal check-in time for international flights is an hour before the time of departure. For domestic flight, the check-in time varies according to the type of flight and local customs. The normal check-in procedure involves a passenger service agent who checks the passenger’s ticket and his reservation status. If the passenger is boarding an international flight, the agent also checks his documents to see that they are in order.
