We didn’t hear anything as we were sleeping upstairs.

Past Perfect Simple

An earlier action in a past sequence

An ongoing action up to or just before a time in the past

She had been training for weeks before she entered the race.

Used to + infinitive

Past actions which no longer take place

Past states which no longer exist

Would + infinitive

We would get up early every Saturday.
