Medical education in Ukraine

1. When was the NMU founded? What by?

National O.O. Bohomolets Medical University is one of the oldest medical education institutions in Ukraine. The University was founded in 1841 as a Medical Department of Kyiv Saint Volodymyr University. Prominent surgeon M.I. Pyrohov was the founded of this department.

2. When did our university assume the status of an independent higher medical institution?

After its reorganization in 1921 the instate assumed the status of an independent higher medical education institution.

3. When was the institute named in honor of academician Bohomolets? Speak on a O.O. Bohomolets contributions into medicine?

In 1946 the Institute was named after Academician O.O. Bohomolets who was the founded of a large school of pathophysiologists. In 1925 O.O. Bohomolets organized the Section of Experimental Pathology of the Institute of Higher Nervous Activity. Bohomolets did not passively follow the scientific ideas of the schools which influenced the first years of his scientific activity.

4. How many faculties are there in our university new? What are they?

In 1993 National O.O. Bohomolets Medical University was licensed to train students of four specialties : medical, paediatric, stomatological and medicoprophylactic. In 1997 two new faculties were organized at our University: the first in Ukraine military medical faculty to train doctors for the Armed Forced of our country and a pharmaceutical faculty.

Тhere are 8 faculties at the university now: The First, The Second, The Third and Fourth Medical, Pharmaceutical, Stomatological, Medico-Psyhological and The faculty for training Military Doctors.

5. What scientists contributed to the development nmu? Speak on Pirogov’s medical achievements?

Prominent surgeon M.I. Pyrohov was the founder of Medical Department of Kyiv Saint Volodymyr University. He paid much attention to the establishment of the faculty. Its first dean was another well-known surgeon, V.I. Karavayev, Pyrohov’s disciple. M.I. Kozlov, who was a Pyrohov’s follower, founded the Anatomy Department.

M.I. Pyrohov devised the plaster cast, first used successfully in the Sevastopol campaign, and the Ryrohov amputation a method of severing the foot.

His work, “Fundamentals of Field Surgery” (1864), soon became a reference book for field surgeons in all countries.

He formulated some of the most important principles of treating gunshot wounds, fractures, shock and wound infections. He also developed classical, world acknowledged methods of operations and treatment in ophthalmology, urology, and other fields.

6. What are the requirements for entering a medical university?

To enter a higher medical education establishment one should past external admission testing and only those who achieve good results are admitted. Applicants may not only demonstrate high efficiency in some subjects but also preset results of admission test to a couple of universities which gives applicants a possibility to make a better choice. As for future medical students they should have high academic achievements in such subjects as biology, physics, and Ukrainian language.

7. What is the period of internship? What does it depend on?

After graduating from a higher medical school undergraduates get diplomas and are supposed to work as interns for a year or more depending on the chosen medical career.

8. How many years does it take to become a doctor?

The period of training at most Ukrainian higher medical schools is 5 years to become a pharmacist or a dentist and 6 years to become a specialist in great variety of medical specialties. ( to become a practitioner).

9. When and where do medical students have practical training? What do they do during their practical course?

After the fourth year students must undertake a practical course during which they work as doctor’s assistants and have a possibility to learn the importance of good doctor-patient relationship. Passing the “Step 2” examination students demonstrate their professional knowledge in such clinical subjects as: therapy, surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, infectious diseases, ENT diseases, ophthalmology, etc.

10. What are the admission requirements for entering medical school in the USA.?

Admission into medical school requires a four-year Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Admission criteria may include overall performance in the undergraduate years, the score on the Medical College Admission Test, application essays, letters of recommendation and interviews.

11. How is the course of medical studies Divided in the USA and G. B.?

In the USA the course of study is divided into two roughly equal components: pre-clinical and clinical. Pre-clinical study generally comprises the first two years of study. The clinical period include the two final years of medical school. In the G. B. undergraduates education occupies five years? Consisting of two years of basic sciences and three years of clinical work.

12. What subjects do medical students learn during medical studies in the USA and Great Britain?

Pre-clinical study generally comprises some subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, histology, embryology, microbiology, pathology, pathophysiology, and neurosciences. During the clinical part of studying the students observe and take part in the care of patients under the supervision of resident. Rotations are required in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, family medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, neurology, and psychiatry.

In Great Britain pre-clinical training consists of the basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology. Clinical studies consist of teaching in the various areas of clinical medicine such as internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry and surgery.
