VITAMIN E

Although the exact biochemical mechanisms of vitamin E in the body are unclear, it is an essential

element of human nutrition. Many of its actions are related to its antioxidant properties. Vitamin E may protect cellular constituents from oxidation and prevent the formation of toxic oxidation products; it preserves red blood cell wall integrity and protects them against hemolysis; it may act as a cofactor in enzyme systems.

Clinical deficiency of vitamin E is rare, since adequate amounts are supplied in the normal diet. Sources of vitamin E include oils, vegetable shortening and margarine. Other food sources include leafy vegetables, milk, eggs and meats. Absorption depends on the ability to digest and absorb fat; bile is essential.

Vitamin E requirements may be increased in patients taking large doses of iron; diets containing selenium, sulfur-amino acids or antioxidants may decrease the daily requirement. Vitamin E supplementation has been effective in preventing the hemolytic anemia and relieving the edema and skin lesions.
