II. Read the text:

The ready-made clothes department offers articles of home and foreign production. Clothes in different styles, colours and sizes are for sale here. At this department women can buy dresses, shirts, blouses, coats, jackets and jeans. The shop-assistant is always ready to serve the customers politely and will help everybody to choose the thing which will fit the person well.

For men the ready-made clothes department offers suits, shirts, trousers, jeans, sport shirts. If you liked something that you intend to buy, you may try it in the fitting room.

Answer the questions:

  1. What goods can women buy at the ready-made clothes department?

  2. What articles of clothes can men buy at the ready-made clothes department?

  3. Where can you try the things on?

III. Read the dialogue and answer the questions.

It’s Too Small For Me

Assistant:

Do you like this dress, madam?

Lady:

I like the color very much. It is a lovely dress, but it is too small for me.

Assistant:

What about this one? It’s a lovely dress. It’s very smart. Short skirts are in fashion now. Would you like to buy it?

Lady:

All right. I am afraid this green dress is too small for me as well. It’s smaller than the blue one. I don’t like the color either. It doesn’t suit me at all. I think the blue dress is prettier. Could you show me another blue dress? I want a dress like that one, but must be my size.

Assistant:

I am afraid I don’t have a larger dress. This is the largest dress in the shop.

IV. Look through the dialogue and reproduce the phrases with adjective in the comparative and superlative degrees.

V. Find in the text appropriate English phrases for the following:

a) - What would you like, sir?

- I need a suit for everyday wear; can I have a look at this grey suit?

- Here you are. It’s size 50

- Can I try it on?

- Certainly. The fitting room is there.

b) - What can I do for you?

- I would like to buy a sweater.

- What size do you wear?

- Fifty-two dark colors, please: black or brown.

Customer:

I’d like to buy an every day dress.

Shop assistant:

We have got fashionable ones. Try on this one.

Customer:

It’s a bit tight.

Shop assistant:

Oh, no. It’s a modern silhouette.

Customer:

I am afraid; it’s too expensive for me.

Shop assistant:

This model is all fashion now.

Customer:

Well, I’ll think it over.

d) A: I would like to try on one of these dresses.

B: That dress seems to be very nice and the latest style.

A: I like the style but I don’t like the color and after all, I believe it’s too expensive for me.

C: What about this one? We have this model in several size and color. I’d recommend this brown one. This is a dress to match your hair and eyes. It is the last style and I think it will suit you best.

A: Let ma see the brown one in my size. Yes, that is better, but isn’t the skirt too long for me? Can I have it shortened a little?

C: Yes, we will shorten that for you an inch or two and we will have to take the waist in a little as well, but you can leave all that to as. The dress suits you very well.

  1. Ann to salesgirl: I’d like a summer frock but not too loud, please.

Salesgirl: We have some very nice greens and blues.

Ann: Show me something in green. Green becomes me. (Ann goes to the room and tries on frock. The frock fits her all right. She pays the money cash desk, gives the check to the salesgirl who up the frock and hands it to Ann)

f) Mike to the shop-assistant: I want a suit, something in grey, please.

A: Single- or double-breasted?

M: Double-breasted. I’d like something smart-looking not a casual one.

A: Here is just your size and that fitting-room.

M: Yes, it fits me perfectly. It’s just want. (the shop-assistant wraps up the suit and Mike goes to buy a new shirt to match the suit.

g)– What can I do for you?

- I’m looking for a skirt. I’d like something in green.

- What size are you?

- I’m not sure but I think … 14.

- Here is an excellent skirt in green silk. Will you try it on?

- Yes. Where is the fitting room?

- Come this way.

(some minutes later)

  • How does it look?

  • It looks great. It’s exactly your size.

  • Yow much is it?

  • It’s only 15 dollars.

  • All right. I’ll take it.

  • Thank you. Come again.
