SYLLABUS
Course Description
Study of the theoretical aspects of word structure and meaning, functioning of words and word combinations in speech, as well as elements of lexicography and phraseology.
Requirements for an “automatic” grade
Regular class attendance. Only one absence (excused or unexcused) is allowed.
Intelligent reading and participating in class discussion.
Quizzes on practical material.
Cards with examples on all the assigned readings (not to be copied from the textbooks used in class).
Glossary of linguistic terms.
Written papers and oral presentations assigned by the professor.
Final test.
All the assignments must be completed on the designated dates. Unless you have some legitimate and provable excuse, late assignments will not be received.
Academic Policy
Plagiarism and cheating will be treated as major violations of the academic policy.
Plagiarism is the use of somebody else’s words and ideas in one’s own work without reference to the source.
Cheating is dishonest or deceitful behavior like copying somebody else’s paper or allowing another student to copy from your work, using unauthorized materials during the test, prompting a student during an oral answer, etc.
Final Examination
The students who won't get an “automatic” grade, will have to take an exam (please see the description on p. …). In this case the final grade will be based on:
Final Examination 50%
Class Participation/Preparation 50%
It means that the results of the work during the semester will be taken into account. Note that after the third unexcused absence one point will be deducted from the final examination grade.
