AIDS

AIDS threatens to put another nail in the coffin of traditional private medical care in the USA. The costs of treating AIDS are enormous and, from an insurance company's point of view, they represent the worst catastrophe imaginable. What a medical insurance company would really like is for participants to pay into the scheme for 50 years and then drop dead in the street without ever requiring medical attention. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. However, in most cases people do pay into the plan for many years before they need expensive treatment, by which time they have often paid in more than they take out.

The very worst thing that can happen, from an insurance company's point of view, is for somebody to pay into a plan for 2 or 3 years and then require incredibly expensive treatment, at the end of which the patient dies and therefore cannot pay any more premiums into the insurance plan. This last scenario, of course, describes AIDS perfectly, and private insurance companies Eire doing everything within the law not to insure anybody from a high risk group who may later develop AIDS. This is making it very difficult for large groups of people to obtain any kind of medical insurance. In some cases it is just because they live in the wrong part of town, which happens to be frequented by gay or drug abusing individuals.

The result is that more and more of the medical care costs are being thrown on to the state and federal governments and, increasingly, the private insurance schemes are looking to the government for some kind of lead as to which direction to take.INFECTIOUS DISEASES
