4) p.151, l. 15-24. Account for the digression into the past, antonomasia and repetition in the passage.

5) p.152, l.1. Note the change in naming the hide-out.

6) p.152, l. 12-25. The narrator uses retardation in telling her wish. What do you think is its function?

7) p.154, l. 21-28. Compare the conversation to that of chapter 9 (p.91).

8) p.154,l. 31. What SD is used by Mr. Bergen to address Pierce and what is expressed through this SD?

9) p. 154, l. 32 - p.155, l. 6. Comment on the cause of misunderstanding between Pierce and Mr. Bergen.

III. Questions and tasks on the chapter

1. State Patty's mood at the beginning of the chapter. Did anything in the beginning predict the events at the end of the chapter?

2. Analyse Patty's gains and losses. Do you think she has grown up? Prove your viewpoint.

3. See how masterfully Patty's examination is organized. Comment on Pierce's methods. Do you think he has a "speaking name"? Think of the reason to examine the girl when Reiker had already been shot.

4. Write a summary of analysis of pp.157-160. In your anlysis touch upon the following questions:

  1. State the ways to increase tension and to show the reader the speeding-up of the interview.

  2. Analyse the means to describe the girl's state of mind. Is she getting more and more mixed?

  3. Comment on the unexpected display of the shirt. Was it really unexpected? (See p.157, l.13)?

  4. Find out relevant repetitions in the part. What is their function? Comment on the order of their appearance in the text.

  5. Analyse the ways to describe the FBI officer's satisfaction.

  6. Comment on the CSD on p.160, l. 1-3. State the function of words belonging to the thematic field of time, other SD.

  7. State the function of different types of print in the part.

  8. What passage do you think is the denouement of the part and what is the climax?
