58.4 Telephone receivers
Like telephone transmitters, telephone receivers have been designed using numerous principles, but the earliest type tended to be electromagnetic as shown in Figure 58.5.
An electromagnet winding terminates the telephone line and picks up the a.c. signals from the line, varying the magnetic field. The thin iron diaphragm, held in close proximity to the ends of the magnetic poles, is moved to and from the poles of the electromagnet. The current detected in the coils the closer the diaphragm is pulled to the poles of the magnet. The diaphragm therefore vibrates in unison with the received speech signal.
58.4.1 Rocking armature receiver
The construction of this type of receiver is the same as the rocking armature transmitter. When this device is used as a receiver it is similar in operation to the electromagnetic type. An a.c. current is detected in the telephone line and this causes the armature to move back and forth in sympathy with the a.c. current on the line. The armature is linked to a diaphragm which vibrates causing sound to be reproduced.
58.4.2 Moving coil receiver
This type of receiver is similar in construction to a loudspeaker, as shown in Figure 58.6. A flexible diaphragm, normally of a plastic material, is formed into a shallow conical shape and a former, wound with very thin wire, is attached to the diaphragm. The assembly is then suspended in the field of a permanent magnet. The coil is connected to the telephone line and detects the a.c. speech current on the line, inducing a change in the magnet field which causes the diaphragm to vibrate, reproducing sound from the received speech signal.
