S peaking

46 Some people have strong reactions to the weather. What about you? Find out how other members of the group often feel :

  • on a cold winter’s morning

  • on a warm summer’s evening with a gentle sea breeze.

  • on a wet and windy day.

  • towards the end of a long spell of very hot humid weather

  • just before a violent thunderstorm.

47 Say what the weather might or might not be like:

- tomorrow - next week

- next month - in ten years time

48 You are a TV forecaster. Choose one map A or B and represent your own weather forecast according to the weather symbols in the map.

A NORTH AMERICA

B WEST EUROPE

49 Work in pairs. Look at the pictures below, compare and contrast them. Listen to each other and give your arguments.

Example: Student A: These pictures both are beautiful.

Student B: Yes, but the seasons are different.

WRITING

50 Delphine wrote to her friend Benita asking for some advice. Read Delphine’s letter and Benita’s reply, and find the answers to these questions.

A What type of accommodation might Delphine like?

B What type of clothes should Delphine bring and why?

C When might be the best time to come?

D What might Delphine like to do?

E What might the weather be like?

Dear Benita,

At last I’m thinking of coming to Britain. When’s the best time to come?

Thanks for your help!

Love, Delphine

Dear Delphine,

It’s good to hear you may want to visit Britain. I think October is the best time to come. It’s usually quite warm, although there may be some rain, and it might be a bit cold in the evening, so bring a sweater. Best of all, there won’t be so many tourists. Make sure you bring an umbrella. You may like to stay in a bed and breakfast, which is a private house with a guest bedroom. You won’t have to pay much for this type of accommodation. When you arrive in London you may like to buy a rail card to travel around the rest of the country.

I hope this is useful.

Best Wishes,

Benita.

51 Imagine an English friend wants to visit your country and has asked you when the best time is to visit. Write a letter to your friend (100 words).
