Symbol of peace reached Kyiv sky or How "Kyiv Open" 2011 was held

During the last weekend, October 1-2, 2011 in Kyiv, the participants of the Fourth Annual International Debate Tournament “Kyiv Open” were searching for the ways to change the world for better. The event, held by the All-Ukrainian Youth NGO “Debate Academy”, attracted over 70 people from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Lithuanian, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands.

The Tournament was supported by the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Ukraine, International Organization for Migration Mission in Ukraine, International NGO “Pulse of Democracy” and the Institute of the social work and management of National Pedagogical Dragomanov University, Open Society Foundation and International Debate Education Association.

Traditionally, IDT “Kyiv Open” was devoted to the theme of peace and nonviolence. This year it was especially timely, as on October 2 the world celebrates International Nonviolence Day. Appropriate atmosphere and content were created with many components: symbols of peace and nonviolence, handouts, motions, speeches of experts.

Among the distinguished guest of the Tournament were the expert from IOM in Ukraine Yana Salakhova & Mridula Ghosh – Board Chair of the East European Development Institute. On October 1, Ms. Salakhova informed the participants on the situation with migration processes in Europe, discrimination and xenophobia in the context of peace and nonviolence movement. On the 2nd of October, the anniversary on Mahatma Gandhi Birthday, Mz. Mridula Ghosh held a lecture about the life and activity of the ideologist of nonviolent opposition, his beliefs and principles of strife.

“Kyiv Open” 2011 set new challenges to the participants in order to find solutions of complex problems. For example, should there be no limit on self-defense against violent crimes? Is it better to ban parades and demonstrations that could incite a violent response? Are large bounties for the capture of pirates and the destruction of pirate ships reasonable? Would the cessation of all financial, political and military aid to both Israel and the Palestinian Authority promote the negotiation of a peace deal? Is it democratic to ban political parties that propagate racism and xenophobia? The breaking teams from Germany, Ukraine and two from Russia were debating a really urgent motion on whether the citizens should turn to violence as a means of opposition in an oppressive state?

The tournament symbolically (and traditionally) ended with the release of the white dove, the symbol of peace, to the twilight Kyiv sky, which symbolized the awareness of 70 more young people about the issues of peace and nonviolence.

STS Logistics put into service International Accounting Standards (IAS). International Financial Reporting Standards has become well renowned worldwide in the recent years. E-service is an important component of company’s overall service. The customers are able to address necessary information round the clock via Internet by means of this system. E-service enables customers to customize the system and receive information about cargo location, application, inquiries, payments, etc. Logistics Service group of companies was established in 1996. RLS has its own network of regional representations in 20 cities of the country with its headquarters located in the capital and provides the entire range of logistic services in the territory of the country. The services include cargo transportation by road, air and sea, consolidated shipments, storage and processing of cargo at eleven terminals located in many other cities.

Peace and Democracy: Make your voice heard!

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

This year - on its 30th anniversary - the Day’s theme is “Peace and Democracy: make your voice heard”.

The Preamble to the United Nations Charter states that the Organization was founded to prevent and resolve international conflicts and help build a culture of peace in the world.

Peace and democracy are inextricably linked. Together, they form a partnership that promotes the well-being of all. Embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, democracy supports an environment for a host of political rights and civil liberties.

In line with the Day’s theme, something profoundly remarkable is happening in the world. Young women and men everywhere are demonstrating the power of solidarity by reaching out and rallying together for the common goal of dignity and human rights. This powerful force brings with it the potential to create a peaceful and democratic future. Add your voice!

There are many ways to participate in democratic practices, including taking part in dialogue on constitutional processes, advocating for civil society empowerment, joining the struggle for gender equality and against discrimination, engaging in civic education and promoting voter registration.

The International Day of Peace offers people globally, a shared date to organize events and undertake deeds celebrating the importance of peace and democracy in realistic and useful ways.

Message of the Secretary-General:

"Every year on the International Day of Peace, people around the world commit to non-violence and to harmony among all peoples and nations.

Peace is our mission; our day-to-day quest.

This year’s theme focuses on the timely issue of peace and democracy.

Democracy is a core value of the United Nations.

It is crucial for human rights.

It provides channels for resolving differences.

It gives hope to the marginalized and power to the people.

But democracy does not just happen; it has to be nurtured and defended.

The world needs you to speak out: for social justice and freedom of the press; for a clean environment and women’s empowerment; for the rule of law and the right to a say in one’s own future.

This year, young people have been on the frontlines for freedom. I salute the activists and ordinary people for their courage and determination to build a better future. We at the United Nations will work in common cause to realize our shared aspirations for dignity, security and opportunity for all. To all those seeking peace, this is your day, and we are with you".

Military logistics. The historical leaders Hannibal Barca, Alexander the Great, and the Duke of Wellington are considered to have been logistical geniuses. Another field within logistics is called Medical logistics.
