1.3. Anglicism’s in Ukrainian Terminology System

Ukrainian terminology about two centuries has attracted the attention of many scientists, specialists and enthusiasts of the national revival. The Ukrainian language is as equal as the other languages, and is quite suitable for the creation of a scientific style. Another thing is that because of historical circumstances and political speculation, it has not always had the right for freely and unconditionally fulfil its direct functions, serving different areas of human life. The peculiarity of our time is that finally, after years of hardship and oppression, the Ukrainian language has taken again its deserving place in all spheres of life, and, in particular, in the scientific field. As I. Ogijenko once wrote, "The Ukrainian language can be the language of science, like all the other languages can".

The national terminology as a part of scientific language is on the crest of its third national revival. At the request of secondary and higher education during the 90-th, appeared a number of dictionaries, which, to some extent, filled the gap of special names and concepts.

Estimated: about 90% of new words that appear in each language are terminologies. Modern Ukrainian terminology system also actively updates with new units - mostly borrowings from the English. One of the ways of learning such loans is to combine them with our own terminologies or with the long terms. Despite the fact that the Ukrainian language assimilates partly to the borrowed words, still plenty of Anglicism’s threatens the clarity of the national terminology system and often affects negatively on the speed of the learning process. Rockslide of borrowings is the merit of its fashion. What for Ukrainian language needs new terms?

The issue of spelling is one of the most important not only in terminology science but in the Ukrainian culture in general. Therefore this issue was not omitted by the participants of the VI International conference on terminology. In particular L. Polyuh in the material "The latest edition of Ukrainian spelling rules" stressed that the task of the new editing is to give the full-life to those elements of the Ukrainian language which in the time of totalitarianism because of some political reasons were forcibly imprinted on the background of the periphery of communication or totally prohibited, and noted briefly on the changes predicted in the new edition [12; p. 51].

At the VI international conference on terminology system, issues of English borrowings in modern Ukrainian terminology has been in the spotlight in the publications of O. Kocherga and N. Nepyjvoda "Expressed possibilities of the Ukrainian language and its implementing into terminology creation". The authors analyzed a number of English-Ukrainian dictionaries and came to the concluded that modern dictionaries in its translational part mainly calque the model of the term of the language producer, that is why we have got so many analogues.

The publication refers to the borrowings of English constructions, inaccurate of the translation from English sources, about the negative role of intermediary language, which is mostly Russian, because through it we often get distorted terms. The article "Evolution of influence of the Russian and English languages on the Ukrainian scientific and technical terminology system in a globalizing economy and the internationalization of science" V. Kalashnyk and M. Cherpak outlined clearly the situation currently prevailing nowadays in the scientific and technical terminology, including:

  1. the existence of the significant scientific and technical layer of intellectuals, who were educated in Russian and still continue using it;

  2. the lack of a few pieces of professional literature in Ukrainian;

  3. the large number of professionals, who consider Russian their native language and do not wish to move into Ukrainian.

In such circumstances borrowed terms prevail, which become international [7; p. 17].

When contacting with different languages, Ukrainian borrow new words of common usage and special ones. Thereby the problem of accurate translation and search of the national matches occur. The question of translating foreign words arises in the publication by N. Sapalovoyi "Use of the Ukrainian translation of scientific and technical terms of foreign origin. There is told about non-equivalent vocabulary, i.e. the one that currently has no national counterparts, and ways to transfer Ukrainian, among which the author points out a transliteration, loan translation, descriptive translation. In the publications idea is put forward that modern languages are mixed, they are full of borrowings, which we cannot do without, because they facilitate specialists' communication. In the artistic language such words happen rarely. "Every foreign word, - the author says - can be translated into Ukrainian, thus the translation may not always be accurate and could easily replace the alien equivalent. It requires the wider Ukrainian usage of the word. But often, and the Ukrainian word can not drive out the usage of the alien but it will be next to it. The positive side is that the Ukrainian neologism can be very used and gradually it replaces the alien word. We seem that the issue of the Ukrainian scientific style arises which evolved not equally throughout the ages, and walked a thorny path of its establishment and formation. When developing a style a lot of translation of certain terms removes, because when writing a scientific work, we can avoid some words or phrases without using some participial forms or borrowed words. Let's remember the words of I. Ogiyenko, who wrote: "It turned out that our language is very flexible and very suitable for creating terminology names" [7; p. 9].
