DUBLIN

Dublin is the capital of the Irish Republic, which is completely separate and independent from Britain and Northern Ireland. The southern part of Ireland after a long and violent struggle became, the Irish Free State in 1921 and in 1949 it declared itself a republic.

Dublin is situated on the east coast of Ireland. It is a fine city, with beautiful grey stone houses. The river Liffey runs through the middle and, like London and Paris, Dublin has lots of bridges. Many people know about O'Connel Bridge. It is unusual because it is almost square (47 metres wide and 46 metres across). People know about the Dublin Post Office too. In 1916 there was fighting there between Irishmen and British soldiers.

Because Dublin is near the sea you can sometimes feel the wind on your face in the middle of the city. If you go to Dublin, you must visit Phoenix Park. It has beautiful gardens with deer, and there is a market there on Sundays. There is also horse racing in the park. When Pope John Paul П. visited Ireland in 1979, over one million people came to see and hear him in Phoenix Park.

You must also visit Trinity College. You can see the book of Kells there. It is a very beautiful book. Perhaps there is not a more beautiful book in the world. Irish monks wrote it and painted its pictures 1200 years ago. It tells the gospel story. In Trinity College you can also see the Brian Boru Harp which was made in the 14th century, three centuries before Brian Bory lived. Dublin has always been a city of music.

Many fine world-famous writers were born in Dublin: James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw. In James Joyce's novel Ulysses, one of the most important books of the twentieth century and in his book of short stories Dubliners the action takes place in Dublin.

DISNEYLAND, THE WORLD OF MAGIC

Walt Disney was always a man of dreams, fantasy and imagination. In 19S2 he came up with an idea to build an amusement park, that would be. entertaining for adults as well as for children.

Disney located a 244-acre orange grove 25 miles south of Los Angeles. California. He had his architects draw up tentative plans and was all ready to start when he faced a really difficult problem: money. Though he was a world-famous producer, the creator of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Snow White and Cinderella he could not find any investors for his "risky" project The total cost was estimated at $5 million and Walt Disney had to borrow money and to mortgage his house, furniture and stock holdings. Little by little, as the plan began to take shape, investors Started to take interest in the project. By the time Disneyland opened to the public in 1955 the cost had risen to $17 million.

The amusement park was an instant success. Both children and adults were fascinated by Adventureland, Fantasyland, Frontierland and Tomorrowland. Walt Disney's magic kingdom offered a unique fantasy adventure. People from all over the world including, monarchs, presidents, prime ministers and many other very important persons flocked to Disneyland by the millions.

THE BEGINNING OF TOE ANGLICAN CHURCH England was a Roman Catholic country until 1534. Why did this change? What happened to give rise to a new Church, the Church of England?

It was Henry VIII who broke away from the Roman Church and ended all contacts with the Pope. He was born in 1491 and in 1509 when he was 18 he succeeded his father Henry VII. He was young, handsome, charming, well-educated but his brilliant appearance was deceitful. In reality he was hard, cruel, ambitious, calculating, wasteful with money and interested in pleasing himself.

. His first wife Catherine of Aragon was five years older than Henry and she had only given him a daughter and he wanted a son. So he decided to divorce her but the head of the Roman Catholic church in Rome the Pope refused to give him the permission to the divorce.

Henry was extremely angry, he persuaded bishops to make him head of the Church in England and this became a law after the decision of the Parliament in 1534. This was the beginning of Anglican Church. This decision was political, not religious. Henry wanted to control the Church and to get hold of its money and lands.

Henry VIII had six wives and two of them were beheaded: Ann Boleyn and Catherine Howard. His second wife Anne Boleyn gave birth to a daughter who later became Queen Elizabeth I. Anne .Boleyn was later accused of being unfaithful to Hemy and in 1536 she was beheaded.

Henry was a man of scholarship and encouraged the arts. He ordered the Bible to be translated into English and printed in English. Under Henry VIII England became richer and more powerful.
