V. Speak on the topic: "London- the capital of Great Britain"

IV. Read the following text and answer the questions to it THE BARD OF WALES

Wales has always been called the land of poetry and song. Certainly poetry is valued and enjoyed by ordinary people and the crowning of the bard (the Welsh word for poet) is probably the most important event at the Welsh National Eisteddfod Cultural Festival every year.

Wales's most famous poet Dylan Thomas loved words, their sound, colour and variety. He had a marvellous rich speaking voice. His style of writing influenced many poets and writers all over the world. Dylan Thomas was born and brought up in Swansea, a town on the south coast, of Wales. He wrote about the hills, the sea, and the places where he played when he was a boy. His poetry7 is often like painting or music: when you read it, you can hear the wind and the sea, and see the colours of the Welsh landscape.

Dylan Thomas wasn't only a great poet. He worked in London as a journalist writing radio and film scripts at the same time. One of his most famous radio plays, Under Milk Wood, has been adapted for the stage and performed all over the world. This is a portrait of a typical Welsh village and the people who live there. They are eccentric, greedy, wicked, rude, crazy, -but always hilarious and full of life. Much of his working life was spent in such a village on the South West coast. He creates the atmosphere of the village life by magical use of words and characters.

The power of his poetry lies in its music and use of striking images. That is what Dylan Thomas himself wrote about his love for words: I cared for the shapes of sound that the words made in my ears; I cared for the colours that the words cast on my eyes. He left many recordings of his poems, read by himself. He died an early death in New York at the age of 39.

IV. Read the following text and answer the questions to it canberra

Canberra is Australia's National Capital since 1927. When the Australian States federated in 1901, it was decided to build an entirely new city. The design of the city formed the subject of a worldwide competition (in 1911) which was won by Walter Burly Griffin, a Chicago architect.

The central point of the plan was Capital НД1 from which all the main avenues were to radiate and the streets were to lie in concentric circles. The administrative, commercial, industrial and residential areas of the town were all sharply separated. Canberra is a garden city. Several million trees and shrubs line its wide streets.

There are many interesting buildings in Canberra. The most important is Parliament House, containing two Chambers for the Senate and the House of Representatives. In the building there are many paintings, statues, busts, and medallions, portraying prominent figures in Australian public life; there are also works of art and of historical interest connected with the development of Australia.

The Australian National University, which stands on a site of some 200 acres in the north of the city, was founded in 1946 and is devoted to research in physical sciences, medicine, social sciences and Pacific studies. The Australian Institute of Anatomy is also worth visiting. Here are displayed the bones and skins of many creatures, chiefly Australian, some of which are fast approaching extinction.

Other notable buildings are: the Commonwealth National Library; the School of Forestry, with a beautiful background of pine plantations, where students from al states and from many Asian countries are trained as professional foresters, the Commonwealth Observatory, and the Australian War Memorial.

1. When was Canberra built?

2 Haw is Canberra designed?
