Practical Applications Of Technology Advances

The most incredibly helpful personal robot. Imagine a walking, talking, seeing, hearing personal robot! RoboScout has large, dynamic eyes that truly “see” through a hidden-eye surveillance camera. Its 2.4 GHz transmitter sends clear images to a 3-x-4-inch LCD on a wireless remote-control center. Hidden microphones pick up sounds and allow conversations back and forth, too. RoboScout has a large vocabulary – greetings, exclamations, plus ditties, commands, protests and questions. Select special modes. In “sentry” RoboScout’s sensors detect motion and trigger voice alerts. Swith to “monitor” to keep an eye on a child at play. Press “greet” and RoboScout will welcome guests. Press “message” to record a 15-second memo. Both the RoboScout and its controller have built-in rechargeable batteries, each comes with a charging adapter. RoboScout stands 25 inches tall. The remote is 12 inches wide, its LCD is 3x4 inches. Optional Controller puts all functions on your PC.

New Roomba Pro Elite Robotic Floor Vac with remote control cleans and sweeps automatically – even when you’re asleep or out of the house.

Now you can keep your home as clean as can be – with virtually no additional effort on your part. Roomba is the futuristic home appliance from iRobot that works like a spiraling pool cleaner to automatically vacuum and sweep up dirt, dust, spilled cereal and pet hair from carpets, rugs, hardwood floors and kitchen tile. Its radically low profile makes it easy for you – or it – to clean daily under big beds, deep sofas and low-slung chairs that harbor dust-and fur-balls. A side brush thoroughly sweeps along walls, baseboards and other hard-to-reach corners.

All you do is press a button to set the timer that tells Roomba what size room to clean. Once set, iRobot’s Intelligent Floor Vac goes to work – steering away from stairs and guided by infrared sensors to navigate around obstacles and bounce off a beamed “virtual wall” that keeps it from crossing open areas as wide as 20 feet. Roomba easily makes transitions from rug-to-floor and over thresholds, its non-marring bumper protects your furniture. There are no bags to replace, just remove and empty its permanent catch tray.

One 12-hour charge of the built-in NIMH battery pack gives Roomba up to 90 minutes of cleaning power. An optional Fast Charger gets Roomba ready to go in just 2 ½ hours. Extra infrared “virtual walls” are also available. The remote control lets you steer Roomba to a desired location. Spot Cleaning mode allows Roomba to focus on areas that need extra attention.

Always misplacing your glasses? Keys? Remote? “Now You Can Find It!” locator puts a pager on all elusive things.

Attach one of the system’s four RF receiver beeper discs to any of those elusive objects that seem to wander off by themselves – keys, eyeglass case, TV remote, cell phone, your child’s favourite toy and whatever else is forever getting misplaced. When an item is lost, just press its corresponding button on the system’s portable radio-frequency transmitter base. Carry the base from room to room and, whenever you get within 30 feet of the misplaced object, its attached disc will emit a loud series of beeps to lead you to the wayward item.

Each beeper disc secures to virtually any object with its key ring or with a double-sided adhesive pad; write a name or apply a sticker for each object opposite its button on the base. The discs and buttons are colour-coded; additionally, they’re coded with Braille-like bumps so someone with limited vision who’s lost his or her eyeglasses can use the system.

The base comes with a magnetic mounting bracket that attaches to a metal surface, like a refrigerator or filing cabinet. He base unit itself will start beeping if it hasn’t been returned to the bracket within six minutes – so it won’t be misplaced!
