VII. Topic 'Geography'

We are starting the study of a rather interesting topic about the geography of our planet. And at the beginning let’s revise your school knowledge of the subject. Please, try to answer the following questions based on the school course of Geography.

  1. Do we have four or five oceans on our planet? What are the names of the oceans?

  2. What sea is situated below the sea level?

  3. How many seas of what oceans wash our country?

  4. What seas have 'colour' names? Where are they situated?

  5. What is the warmest sea in the world?

  6. How many continents are there on the planet? What are the names of the continents?

  7. What are five largest countries in size?

  8. What are five smallest countries in size?

  9. What countries have English as the first language (as the native language)?

  31. Some countries are mononational, the other ones are multinational. Can you give examples of countries of each type?

Part I. Geographical situation of different countries, types of climate, their mineral resources and their flora and fauna.

Synonyms and Words Usually Confused by Russian Learners.

  1. Area – Territory

area ['ɛrıə] – 1. any surface having natural or artificial bounds.

  1. f.e. The area of this country is 23,363,000 sq. kms.

2. a part of the earth's surface.

f.e. Large areas of Australia are still unpopulated.

territory – 1. a large tract of land (see area,

f.e. The explorer has travelled over a large territory.

2. all the land under the rule of a particular government (= country).

f.e. The conquered territory was divided among the invaders.

  1. Border - Boundary – Frontier

border – the land near the line tat divides one country or state from another.

f.e. The border between Europe and Asia lies along the Urals.

boundary – a real or imagined line that marks the limits or edges of something and separates it from other things or places; a dividing line.

f.e. National boundaries; County boundaries;

The fence marks the boundaries between my property and his.

frontier ['frʌntjə] – the extreme limit of a country, where its land touches that of another country.

f.e. In the South the frontier of Russia runs over a number of mountains.

* Border and frontier are interchangeable synonyms in a geographical text, but in relation with military matters the word frontier is used.

  1. Coast – Shore - Bank

coast – the land along the edge of the sea.

f.e. The road runs along the coast.

From the ship we could see the coast of Finland.

* When we use the word coast we always think of a particular country.

shore – the part of land that lies by the sea (when regarding it from land)

f.e. The children play on the sea-shore.

bank – the side of a river, canal, etc and the land near it.

f.e. It's on the north bank of the Thames.

  1. Harbour – Port

harbour – a place of shelter for ships (natural or artificial).

f.e. New York has a deep harbour on the Atlantic.

port – a town or a city with a harbour.

f.e. These foodstuffs and raw materials come along the great seaways to London, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast and many other ports.
