Закон сохранения массы и энергии
Все тела обладают массой, которая является неотъемлемым свойством всей материи. В нашем опыте мы наблюдали, что внешний вид материи постоянно меняется, так что было бы разумно предположить, что его масса также претерпевает какие-то изменения. Для проверки этого предположения возьмем кусок угля. Масса этого комка, конечно, гораздо больше, чем пепла, которое выделяется в результате ее сжигания, но мы должны собрать весь газ, все другие материалы, участвующие в горении и подсчитать их вес, и мы найдем, что общая масса осталась неизменной. Весь опыт, накопленный в изучении каждого изменения в веществе показывает, что во всех изменениях общая масса не изменна.
Но каждое изменение в материи влечет за собой изменение энергии. Эта энергия преобразует его внешний вид в целый ряд форм, таких как тепло, энергию, электрическую энергию, химическую энергию, лучистой энергии, кинетической энергии (энергии движущихся тел), или потенциальной энергии.
Опыты, проведенные в течение длительного периода времени, показали, что энергия, так и масса в этой энергии во всех преобразований не создается и не разрушается. Это обобщение известно как закон сохранения энергии. Распределение этой энергии между телами, однако, меняется без каких либо затруднений. Например, если кусок горячего металла помещают в холодную воду, металл охлаждается и вода нагревается, так что металл теряет энергию, и вода приобретает ее. Мы также считаем, что энергия может свободно трансформироваться из одного вида в другой. Таким образом, тепловая энергия сжигания угля может быть изменена в кинетическую энергию локомотива. Аналогичным образом, кинетическая энергия, падающей воды может быть преобразована в электричество. Если бы мы могли тщательно изучить эти преобразования, то мы должны найти , что определенное количество энергии одного вида всегда преобразуется в эквивалентное количество другого.
При любых действиях с участием изменение одного вида энергии в другой ни прибывает, ни убывает. Другими словами, когда количество одного вида энергии преобразуется в точно эквивалентное количество другого рода то они должны быть равны.
Оба принципа сохранения массы и принципа сохранения энергии позволили найти простой, прямой подход в создании материального и энергетического баланса. В обоих случаях относительно полный учет может быть сделан из осознания того, что входит в систему и то, что выходит , что эффективность данной системы , будь то доменная печь или локомотив .
