For the transportation of natural gas, pipelines had no rival until the advent of refrigerated methane tankers.
The economics of gas pipelines differ somewhat from these of oil lines, as gas lines do not generally operate in competition with other forms of transport, but form an even more completely integrated part of the business of getting the gas from the well head to the consumer. In this, natural gas is at a disadvantage compared with oil because its energy content per unit of volume is far lower; a gas pipeline of given size can transport only about one quarter of the calorific value compared with a similar pipe carrying oil. Compressor stations are more costly to install, and absorb more power than pumping stations on oil lines. Total costs depend largely on the initial pressure of the gas at source and on whether it is discharged into atmospheric or high pressure storage at the receiving end.
