A. TEXT

The House We Live In*

A month ago our family was offered a two-room flat in a house that had just been built. First Mother and Father went there to have a look at it. They said they might not like it at all and would prefer staying in the old house. But they did like it at once and soon we moved in. The

new flat of ours

is on the third floor in a five-storied house.

As there is no

lift (A m e r . — ‘elevator’) we have

to walk

up and down the stairs.

 

The house

we live in has three entrances,

ours is

right in the middle. One can enter the house from the street

or

from the back yard. The latter is meant for children

to

play and for adults to rest in. It has not been cleared

up

yet. There are still some pieces of brick, little heaps of

clay and sand here and there1 and other things left over by the builders.

Mother said the other day that the residents must get together and elect a house committee that would take care of everything. A number of trees would be planted in the

courtyard and

some

grass and flowers would be

sown.

A few benches

and

an arbour would be thought of

too...

B.DIALOGUE

-H e l e n : I hear you’ve been offered a new flat, George, haven’t you?

G e o r g e :

Right you are, Helen. And a fine flat at that!

We are to move in one of these days2. You can’t imagine

how glad we are!

H e l e n :

Hearty

congratulations from everyone of us.

I hope

to be

invited to a house-warming party3. What

about that, .George?

G e o r g e : Certainly, you will be. But you know, it’s a mat­ ter of time. First we must think of buying a few pieces of new furniture. We simply can’t take the old stuff to the new flat. What’s your opinion about that?

H e l e n :

Sure, you can’t. And here I’d like to give you

some

advice. You’d better look for some Czechoslovak

or Rumanian furniture. It isn’t very expensive, and it looks charming, especially in a new flat.

G e o r g e: Oh, thank you ever so much. We’ll follow your advice by all means.

тельным (или

местоимением)-(-инфинитив с инфинитив­

ной частицей или без нее:

Подлежащее здесь как бы разделяется на две поло­ вины: одна часть — в самом начале предложения, а дру­ гая часть, выраженная формой инфинитива, следует сразу после сказуемого.

My Native Town*

I was born very far from Moscow, in the city of Vla­ divostok. My native town is said to be the Eastern sea gateway to Russia. It is situated on the Japanese sea shore,

on the edge of a long and

narrow peninsula.

The

city

houses are running up from

the water brim to

the

tops

of a few hills Thus one has

to climb the streets while

going up and descend them while walking down.

if you gaze at it

from

Gold Horn Bay1. It forms a natural amphitheatre decorated with snow-white buildings.

The town was founded in 1860. In those days there

had been a taiga everywhere and a

lot of

beasts of prey

in it.

 

 

 

Up to now there is in the city the Eagle Hill2, the

Tiger Hill3 and so on. You may be sure

that

no eagle

flies down to town any longer and

tigers

can

sometimes

be met with only in the depths of the Ussuri Taiga. Vladivostok is a bustling city nowadays. Its streets,

shops, cinemas are full of people from early morning till

late

at night. The population has already grown

up to

450,000. Among its residents there are lots of

Russians

and

Ukrainians. Formerly it had been populated

by

quite

a number of Chinese and Koreans.

 

 

 

The city thoroughfare is Lenin Street running parallel

to the seashore. Lenin Street is lined with nice

fourand

five-storied houses. The best stores, the city drama theatre and a few cinemas are also here.

The transport facilities4 are good enough: there are a number of tramlines, buslines, passenger launches5 taking people across the Gold Horn Bay and a suburban electric train.
