ployees should enter all sorts of technical schools and schools of higher learning.

Sergei Gribkov had finished the secondary school. After two years’ work at a factory he was called up for military service. Three more years had gone by and time came to be demobbed3 and return to his native town. Sergei made up his mind to take up his former job at the factory and take the entrance examinations at the local polytechnical institute, the evening department. He knew that he had forgotten quite a lot. He was sure that he would have to work so hard as if he were a green hand in the job.

In May 1964, Gribkov got demobbed and resumed his work at the factory. Soon he joined a month-and-a-half evening course4 at the Institute in order that he should re capitulate the things he had once studied at the secondary school.

In August Sergei took and passed the entrance exams at the machine-building faculty of the evening department. At last he became an institute student, which he was very proud of.

Sergei decided to dispose of his time so that not a minute might be lost. He got up at 6, did his morning exer cises, took a tepid shower, had breakfast and hurried to the factory. From 8 a. m. till 4 p. m. Gribkov was busy doing his daily job of a turner. From 5.30 p. m. till 9.15 p. m. three times a week he was doing his subjects at the Institute.

Sergei is a diligent young man, still unmarried. He al ways takes pains not to lag behind the class. He already knows what is what after working at the factory and ser ving in the Soviet Army. At the Institute Sergei will deepen his knowledge and make his scope of life broader5. He will no doubt make a good specialist in the field of techonology chosen by him. _

fine with me. Well, Sergei, our meeting is quite an oc casion, isn’t it? I suggest we should go somewhere and have a drink.

S e r g e i :

No objections. But first tell me, old boy,

what

have you been doing here? When I cast an eye on you,a

you looked so detached from life9 as though you were

solving a very serious problem.

P a v e l :

Right you are, Sergei! I’m a correspondence stu

dent at the Leningrad Polytechnical institute. They send

me a

lot of written assignments10

and demand

that

everything should be done on time. I’m busy like hell,

S e r g e i :

So am I! The difference is

to sit classes11 three times a week. You can dispose of

your

time more

freely than me, a poor evening learner.

P a v e l :

There’re

pros and cons12 in every situation. As

for me I prefer the way of studies I’ve stepped on. Well,

enough of that!

Let’s be moving, old chap...
