Business in Italy is still generally conducted more formally than in the United States; always address business contacts as Lei. Italians also tend to take a longer lunch break and, except in big cities, people often go home for their noon meal.

On the telephone
In Italy you always dial the full area code (il prefisso) and the number. You can call from a public phone (il telefono pubblico) using a phone card. Italy’s general emergency number is 113; or you can call the Carabinieri on 112; ambulance (l’ambulanza), 118; fire department (i vigili del fuoco), 115.
