9 8 WEEK 10
1 Warm up
Say the months of the year in Italian. (pp.28–9)
Ask “Is there an art gallery?” (pp.48–9) and “How many brothers do you have?” (pp.14–15)
Gli alloggi
At home
The apartment block (il palazzo) is the most common form of urban housing in Italy. A single-family house (la villetta) is more common in rural areas. To find out the total number of rooms, you will need to ask “Quante stanze?”. If you want to know how many bedrooms, ask “Quante camere?”.

Cultural tip You almost never see an Italian home without shutters or roller shades at every window. These are closed at night and in the heat of the day. Curtains tend to be more for decoration. Most apartment blocks have at least one balcony (“il balcone”) for each apartment. These are often filled with plants to make up for the lack of a garden.

1 Warm up
What is the Italian for “table” (pp.20–1), “desk” (pp.80–1), “bed” (pp.60–1), and “restrooms”? (pp.52–3)
How do you say “soft,” “beautiful,” and “big”? (pp.64–5)
In casa
In the house
If you are renting accommodation in Italy, it is normal to be asked to pay for services such as electricity and heating on top of the rent; for short rentals of vacation flats or villas, they might be included in the rent. You may be asked to pay a security deposit (versare una caparra or cauzione).
