Superlative adjectives

1 We add –est to one syllable adjective to make the superlative form.

cold-colder-coldest

2 If a one- or two- syllable adjective ends in – y, we change the y to an I before adding –est.

sunny - sunnier- sunniest

3 If an adjective ends in –e, we just add –st.

large- larger - largest

4 If a one syllable adjective ends in a vowel + one consonant, we double the final consonant before adding –est.

a For most adjectives that are two syllables or more, we add most before the adjective.

b The same is true of some two-syllable adjectives.
