IV. Придаточные предложения подлежащих (subject clauses)

Когда главное предложение выражено безличным оборотом типа it is important, в придаточных предложениях, начинающихся с that, употребляется should в сочетании с Indefinite Infinitive со всеми лицами в единственном и множественном числе, независимо от времени в котором стоит глагол be в безличном обороте. Такие придаточные предложения переводятся на русский язык придаточными предложениями, которые вводятся союзом чтобы.

e.g. It is important that he should return tomorrow. Важно, чтобы он вернулся завтра.

В указанных предложениях вместо should + Infinitive возможно употребление формы Present Subjunctive (особенно в США) .

e.g. It is important that he return tomorrow.

Ex. 1. Open the brackets. Give two variants.

        1. It is demanded that judges and barristers (wear) wigs and gowns in court.

        2. It is demanded that judges (resign) from active participation in all bodies on their appointment to the bench.

        3. In 1986 it was proposed that a number of judges (not/ appear) on a BBC radio program about barristers.

        4. It is essential that High Court judges (appoint) from among barristers of at least 10 years’ standing.

        5. It is not uncommon that the US President (belong) to one party and the majority of those in the House of Representatives or Senate or both (belong) to another.

        6. It is demanded that the President (be) a native-born citizen of at least 35 years old.

        7. It is necessary that a candidate (put down) a deposit of 500 pounds and (collect) ten signatures.

        8. It is desirable that a solicitor (make) a will for you.

        9. It is not necessary that a future solicitor (go) to the University, whereas it is impossible that you (qualify) as a barrister without taking the examination of the Bar Council.

Ex. 2. Your friend dreams of becoming a judge. What are the difficulties he/she could face?

Give him/her some pieces of advice.

Use these ideas:

  • Be impartial

  • Serve in any legislative or executive bodies

  • Appointed by the President

  • Have considerable experience

  • Be over 30 years old

  • Be an expert on advocacy

  • Decide cases according to law

  • Be appointed for life

Ex. 3. Provide the Russian equivalent for the following.

              1. It is almost credible that Mr. Justice Snubb should enquire of the barristers appearing in his court, “What is a crossword?”

              2. It is, then, not surprising that a Bench composed almost entirely of former barristers should lack expertise and knowledge of many of the matters which are central to the lives of people who come into court as litigants or witnesses.

              3. It is inequitable in a democratic society that one set of values should so predominate on the Bench.

              4. It was desirable that there should be a possibility of being delivered from a judge by a new King.

              5. It is unfair to the defendant in a criminal case, or to the parties in a civil case that their legal proceedings should be broadcast to a large audience outside the courtroom.
