INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES

An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by a computer to the outside world. An input device is any peripheral used to provide data and control signals to a computer.

In computing, input/output, refers to the communication between a computer and the outside world. Inputs are the signals or data sent to the system, and outputs are the signals or data sent by the system to the outside.

The most common input devices used by the computer are the keyboard and mouse. The keyboard allows the entry of textual information while the mouse allows the selection of a point on the screen by moving a screen cursor to the point and pressing a mouse button. The most common outputs are monitors and speakers.

A printer is a very common output device. It is used to print the computer output on paper. Colour printers are available but most printing is done using a mono printer that prints only in black. There are three main kinds of printers: dot-matrix, inkjet, and laser.

A monitor is the most common type of output device. It displays the output from the computer on a screen. Because the user sees the computer in action using the monitor screen, the quality of the monitor can make a tremendous difference to the way the user interacts with the computer, and feels about the computer. The display image on a monitor screen can be thought of as being made up of a series of dots.

A keyboard is the most common type of input device. A keyboard is a human interface device which is represented as a layout of buttons. Each button, or key, can be used to either input a linguistic character to a computer, or to call upon a particular function of the computer. Traditional keyboards use spring-based buttons, though newer variations employ virtual keys, or even projected keyboards.

COMPOUND NOUNS (1)

Compound nouns consist of two or more words used together as a single word, e.g. hard drive. In a compound there is a headword and one or more modifiers: ink – jet (modifier) printer (head). Modifiers can refer to different things:

- material, e.g. silicon chip = a chip made of silicon;

- use or function, e.g. search engine = a program used to find information on the Web;

- activity or profession, e.g. software engineer = a person who designs software;

- place, e.g. web portal = a site on the Web that acts as a gateway to other sites;

Compound nouns are written in different ways:

- as two separate words, e.g. control panel = a utility that lets you configure and adjust a system;

- as two words joined with a hyphen, e.g. self-test = an automatic examination of a device;

- as one word, e.g. clipboard = a holding place for text or graphics you've just cut or copied;

Unfortunately there are no rules. For example, you may see clip art, clip-art and clipart. Some compounds change over time, for example two words - web site - become hyphenated after a time, and then eventually end up as one word - website.
