Данные методические указания предназначены для формирования навыков чтения текстов по темам "Наука и техника. Выдающиеся российские и британские ученые. Великие открытия", у студентов младших курсов всех специальностей.

Методические указания состоят из двух частей, в каждой из которых содержится от трех до четырех разделов. Каждый раздел включает в себя тексты по теме, дотекстовые, текстовые и послетекстовые упражнения для формирования и закрепления навыков различных видов чтения, а также умения работать со словарем.

Методические указания могут быть использованы как на аудиторных занятиях, так и для самостоятельной внеаудиторной работы студентов.

A. NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES

Exercise 1. Read the information and memorize the words:

  1. Newspapers and magazines.

newspaper/paper

A set of large folded sheets of paper containing news, articles, pictures, etc, which is printed and sold every day or every week

journal

A serious magazine on a particular subject, containing articles by university teachers, scientists, doctors, etc

magazine

A large, thin book with a paper cover, often printed on a shiny paper, which contains stories, articles, photographs, and sometimes also news

the press

Newspapers and the people who write for them

the media

All the organizations that are involved in providing information to the public, especially newspapers, television, and radio

tabloid

A newspaper that does not contain much serious news, but has stories about famous people, sport,etc

The words in big letters at the top of a newspaper report that tell you what the report is about

News reports

A page in the newspaper where the articles covering up-to-date events are printed

The editorial

a piece of writing in a newspaper that gives the editor's opinion about something, rather than reporting facts

A page in the newspaper where the business news are printed

horoscope

a description of your character and the things that will happen to you, based on the position of the stars and planets at the time of your birth

Small adds

A page in the newspaper where letters from members of the public are printed

scandals

A page in the newspaper where some shocking news about famous people are printed

Letters page

A page in the newspaper where letters from members of the public are printed

TV/sport/business/fashion page (feature articles)

A page in a newspaper that tells you about television, sport, business, or fashion

listings

Lists of films, plays, and other events, with details of the times, dates, and places where they will happen

TV listings

Lists of programmes that are on television and the times they are on

Article

A piece of writing in a newspaper or magazine about a particular subject

Story

A report in a newspaper about a recent event

Feature

A special report in a newspaper or magazine about an interesting subject, place, or person

Scoop

An important or exciting news story that is printed in one newspaper before any of the others know about it

Editorial

A piece of writing in a newspaper that gives the personal opinion of the editor about something that is in the news

Exclusive

A news story that is printed by one newspaper before any of the others know about it

When something is reported in newspapers or magazines, and the way in which it is reported
