Миллионы на борьбу с английским
Европейская комиссия намерена потратить миллионы евро на то, чтобы предотвратить превращение английского языка в официальный язык Европейского союза и поддержать использование французского.
К этому плану комиссию подтолкнули французы, обеспокоенные тем, что после майского расширения ЕС до 25 стран французский язык может утратить свое значение, пишет газета The Times.
Комиссия, ведущая массированный набор служащих из стран, вступающих в ЕС, обнаружила, что 83 % новых сотрудников владеют английским языком и только 24 % – французским.
В настоящее время все сотрудники комиссии должны владеть родным языком и одним из языков ЕС. Обычно это английский язык. Комиссия решила, что каждый новый сотрудник, прежде чем получить повышение, должен выучить третий язык, обычно французский.
Комиссия будет платить за изучение третьего языка, который к 2008 году понадобится примерно 5 тыс. сотрудникам. Это дополнение к существующей программе правительства Франции, которое платит чиновникам в Восточной Европе за то, что они учат французский.

Услуги переводчиков ежегодно обходятся Еврокомиссии в 700 млн. евро и в ближайшее время станут менее доступными. Руководством поставлена цель не дать этой статье расходов превысить 1 млрд. евро в год. Переводчики будут работать теперь только на совещаниях самого высокого уровня.
На совещаниях более низких уровней участникам придется говорить на языке, который понимают все, а это почти неизбежно будет английский.
