Сравнительные конструкции

Than As … as Not so … as The (more) The (less)

Tom is taller than Bob. These shoes are more expensive than the black ones. This result is as good as that one. The bedroom is not so large as the living-room. The more reliable, the more expensive the car is. The less we forget the more we know.

NB:

1. Old – older – the oldest - старый по возрасту

Old – elder – the eldest - старший в семье

2. Far – farther – the farthest – дальнейший по расстоянию

Far – further – the furthest - дальнейший, добавочный

1. Late – later – the latest – поздний по времени

Late – latter – last - второй из двух, последний по порядку

2. Near – nearer – the nearest – ближайший

Near – nearer – the next – следующий по порядку

NB: Certain adjectives form their comparative and superlative degrees in both ways, either by adding –er / -est to the positive form or taking more / most: clever, common, cruel, friendly, gentle, narrow, pleasant, polite, quite, simple, stupid etc.: clever – cleverer – the cleverest ALSO clever – more clever – the most clever.

NB:

1. large большой – larg-er – the larg-est; brave храбрый – brav-er – the brav-est; ripe зрелый – rip-er – the rip-est

Если прилагательное оканчивается на немое – е, то при прибавлении - er, - est немое –е опускается.

2. big большой – bigger – the biggest; hot горячий – hotter – the hottest; thin тонкий – thinner – the thinnest; wet мокрый – wetter – the wettest.

Если прилагательное заканчивается на согласную с предшествующей гласной, то в сравнительной и превосходной степени конечная согласная удваивается.

3. busy занятый – busier – the busiest; easy лёгкий – easier – the easiest; dirty грязный – dirtier – the dirtiest; dry сухой – drier – the driest.

Если прилагательное оканчивается на –y с предшествующей согласной, то в сравнительной и превосходной степени y переходит в i.

4. Gay весёлый – gayer – the gayest

Если перед - y стоит гласная, то - у остается без изменения.
