Infant-Parent Social Interaction Code

Operational Definitions:

1. Response Contingency (RC). The parent starts, stops, or changes

his/her behavior within 1 second in response to the infant's focus

of attention, change of emotional state, or overt behavior.

2. Directiveness (Dir). The parent attempts to lead the pace,

content, and/or form of infant's behavior.

3. Intrusiveness (Intr). The infant's focus of attention is broken

or the infant engages in negative behavior/social detachment which

is preceded by parent directiveness.

4. Facilitation (Fac). The parent allows for or follows the

infant's attention behavior and allows the infant's withdrawal

behavior for the entire coding segment.

5. Intiation (Init). Following a 3 second pause in social

interaction and with no adult prompt, the infant initates or

reintiates social interaction.

6. Participation (Part). The infant engages in either neutral or

positive social interaction.

7. Signal clarity (SCI). The infant engaes in clear signaling. A

clear signal is any overt behavior which allows the coder to

identify the focus of attention and/or a change in emotional state.

8. Intentional Communicative Acts (ICA). The infant alternates a

gaze or gesture between the dyad partner and an object/goal or

directs a motoric/vocal act to the dyad partner and waits for a

response/persists in the communicative act for 2 seconds.

9. Theme Continuity (TC). The theme of a social interaction is

carried over from the previous segment. A theme is defined as three

or more related simultaneous or turntaking behaviors by each dyad

partner.

Social Interaction. Social interaction is defined as an active

mutual/reciprocal exchange. Social interaction may involve aspects

of the environment, but must include overt behavior directed to the

partner by each dyad memb.
