Инфинитив или герундий?
◊ Некоторых глаголы употребляют только с ИНФИНИТИВОМ,
некоторые – только с ГЕРУНДИЕМ:

Сравните: My friend offered to help me with my homework.
My friend suggested doing our homework together.
◊ После глаголов to begin, to bother, to continue, to hate, to intend, to like, to plan, to prefer, to propose, to start можно употреблять и инфинитив и герундий без различия в смысле.
Сравните: I intend to go to university. = I intend going to university.
Note 1: Если глагол употреблён в Continuous, после него можно
употреблять только ИНФИНИТИВ.
Сравните: It started to rain/raining. But: It is starting to rain.
Note 2: Однородные дополнения должны выражаться одной и той же частью
речи.
Сравните: I prefer to stay/staying at home on cold winter evenings.
But: I prefer to stay at home rather than go out on cold winter evenings.
◊ После следующих глаголов и выражение ИНФИНИТИВ и ГЕРУНДИЙ имеют различные значения:

3 to regret to do smth (future event) сожалеть о необходимости сообщить неприятное известие, e.g. I regret to say that you’ve failed. |
3 to regret doing smth (past event) раскаиваться, сожалеть о сделанном, e.g. I regret telling a lie to my friend. |
4 to go on to do smth перейти к другому действию, e.g. The lecturer went on to speak about English traditions. (до этого он говорил о другом) |

5 to try to do smth стараться, делать попытку сделать что-то, e.g. I tried to answer the difficult questions first. |

6 to need to do smth нужно сделать что-то самому, e.g. I need to wash the windows. |
6 to need doing smth нужно, чтобы что-то было сделано кем-то, e.g. The windows need washing. |
7 to mean to do smth намереваться, хотеть сделать что-то, e.g. I meant to get up early but I overslept. |
7 to mean doing smth подразумевать, включать в себя (что-то неприятное), e.g. If we want to go by the early train, it will mean getting up early. |
8 can’t help smb (to) do smth не могу помочь сделать что-то, e.g. I can’t help you (to) wash up. |
8 can’t help doing smth не могу не делать, делаю против своей воли, e.g. I couldn’t help laughing. |
9 to be afraid to do smth бояться делать что-либо (в прямом смысле), e.g. She was afraid to wake her husband (=feared that he might be angry with her). |
9 to be afraid of doing smth опасаться, не хотеть делать что-то, e.g. She was afraid of waking her husband (= did not want to wake him because he was in need of sleep). |

◊ ИНФИНИТИВ или ГЕРУНДИЙ после “TO”
“TO” может быть частицей и предлогом. После частицы TO следует инфинитив (см. список глаголов выше), после предлога TO – герундий.

2 в выражении used to do ['ju:stə du:] smth бывало, случалось что-то делал /только в прошлом/, но не делаю сейчас, e.g. When I was a child, I used to like to play with cars/dolls/…. (choose or write a true sentence) |
1 после глаголов с предлогом TO: to object TO doing smth, to look forward TO doing smth, etc e.g. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. 2 после выражений to be used to doing smth (досл. быть привыкшим делать что-то), to get used to doing smth (досл. стать привычным к чему-то) иметь/приобрести привычку /может относиться к любому времени/ e.g. I am (not) used to getting up early.
