9. Публіцистичний стиль.

Publicistic style- bookish- combines three types- 1.oratory(speeches, lectures, reports); features- direct contact speaker->audience & vice versa. 2. Radio/TV programs. 3. Essays, journalistic articles(editorial). First two comprise oral speech and undergo both features of publicistic and oral speech style, the last can vary fluently, depending on a situation. TV & Radio are crammed with stylistic devices of repetitions, polysyndeton & parallelisms, their aim is to make information persuasive. The principle function of a brief news items is to inform.

It states facts without giving explicit comments and whatever evaluation might be it is implicit.

The language of brief news items is stylistically neutral.

Editorial- Topicality: deal with political, social, economic, moral. Ethical, philisophical, religious, educational, cultural & pop-scientific problems.. The function is to influence the reader by giving the interpretation of certain facts. It is evaluative writing. Editorial appeal not only to readers mind, but to his feeling as well. Editorial is characterised by a wide use of emotionally coloured language elements.

Vocabulary- depends on the subject described. The bulk of the vocabulary used in newspaper writing is neutral and common literary. Newspaper political style has its specific vocabulary features and characterized by an extensible use of :1) special political and economical vocabulary; 2) non-term political vocabulary; 3) newspaper cliché – include fixed similes, dead metaphors, fixed hyperboles. Pressing problem, war hystery, stormy applause, captains of industry; 4) abbreviations (PC) personal computer; politically correct. 5) neologisms :splash down, stop-go, policy. Grammatical peculiarities: a) complex sentenses with a developed system of clause; b) verbal constructions (infinitive, gerund...); c) syntactical complexes ( esp. the nominative and the infinitive); d) attributive noun groups- heart surgery; e) specific word order - 5 W and H pattern – who, why, when, which, where, how.

The headline – a dependent form of newspaper writing, a part of it is considered to be specific genre.

The main function is to inform briefly what the text that follow is about. Headlines often contain elements of appraisal. A skillful headline actually tells a story to arouse or satisfy readers curiosity.

Main features: 1) a delivered breaking up of set expressions; 2) elliptical structure; 3) questions in the form of statements.
