1. Алджернон Монкриф – легкомысленный молодой человек. Когда Алджернон узнает о юной и симпатичной подопечной Джека (Сесили), он отправляется в загородный дом Джека под вымышленным именем. Он притворяется (делает вид), что он – испорченный младший брат Джека Эрнест. Его экспедиция (Bunburying) очень успешна. Алджернон влюбляется в Сесили, и вскоре они помолвлены. Но эта помолвка едва не расторгнута. Дело в том, что по условию завещания покойного мистера Кардью Сесили не может выйти замуж без согласия своего опекуна Джека Вортинга, пока не достигнет совершеннолетия, то есть 35 лет. Джек не хочет давать своего согласия, потому что он не одобряет моральный облик Алджернона. Джек считает его лживым (неправдивым). Джек говорит, что о помолвке с Сесили не может быть и речи. 2. Вопрос о происхождении (origin) Джека Вортинга прояснился совершенно неожиданно и почти случайно. Когда леди Брэкнелл услышала о некой мисс Призм, она захотела немедленно её увидеть. Леди Брэкнелл заявила, что это – жизненно важный вопрос. 28 лет назад мисс Призм работала в доме лорда Брэкнелла. Как выяснилось, мисс Призм положила по ошибке (to do smth by mistake) рукопись своего романа в коляску, а ребенка в сумку.
