Requirements to students' abilities and skills:
By the end of the third year the trainees are to possess the following abilities and skills:
-
to illustrate each theoretical thesis by the examples of the corresponding period of the language development;
-
to be able to show the changes within each linguistic unit during a specific period of time or all the historical period;
-
to correlate the form and meanings of every linguistic unit with those of the units existing in present-day English;
-
to combine theoretical knowledge with doing practical assignments;
-
to compare diachronic phenomena and processes taking place in English with those of other languages;
-
to make use of the observations and comparison of the linguistic units while doing summing up and making conclusions about different processes and their role in the history of the English language.
