The coach is the key to a successful club. To ensure that the club functions efficiently, areas of responsibility should be carefully defined. Very often a club will begin with just one coach who is responsible for running the entire programme. As the club develops responsibilities for different parts of the programme can be divided and the size of the coaching staff can be increased. Add extra coaches only when they are really needed. Remember:

a club can successfully operate with minimum staff and facilities;

a well-established club doesn’t happen overnight, it develops over several years.

From this outline it should be possible to see how a coaching staff can be built up.

Head Coach. The Head Coach is responsible for establishing the club programme, including decisions about such aspects as the number of coaches required, types and sizes of groups, pool time, meet schedules, equipment, and shortand long-term goals. When appointing coaching staff it is important to consider how long they will stay with the programme. It is wise to establish a permanent coaching staff. Too many changes slow down the growth of the club and progress of its swimmers.

The Head Coach must act as a coordinator of all support staff. The coach should work closely with the club Executive in such areas as scheduling, home and away meets and budgeting.

The Head Coach is responsible for coordination of swimming groups. He/she usually coaches the top group.

It is up to the Head Coach to ensure that all staff have the opportunity to develop their coaching skills by retraining and having access to the latest information sources. Time should be spent discussing ideas and coaching techniques to chose the best programme possible.

Finally, the Head Coach should show leadership, set standards in personal appearance, behaviour and discipline.

The Head-Assistant Coach. The Head-Assiatant Coach must be a reliable, full-time coach capable of “stepping in” in the absence of the Head Coach. This coach usually has the responsibility of coaching

the number two group. The Head-Assiatant Coach must have a good understanding of the overall organization and philosophy of the club.

The Head Age-Group Coach. The Head Age-Group Coach is responsible for the development of the clubAge-Group Programme.This programme should be planned so that age-groupers fit into the senior programme and are able to handle the work-load, programme intensity and coaching style of senior groups. He/she selects assistant coaches for the programme and should have outstanding ability to motivate as well as good technical knowledge.

It should be remembered that both employer and employee should sign a contract. This ensures that both parties recognize that they have an obligation to carry out their responsibilities. Details concerning salary, holidays, pension/dental/medical/ benefit plans and sick pay should be negotiated and written down.

It should be remembered that what one GETS is usually directly related to what one GIVES. Recognition motivates coaches to strive for the highest possible standards and results: excellence is a product of ambition.

Whenever possible coaches should be permitted to attend international meets at which their swimmers are competing. Salaries should be made attractive with “fringe benefits” and bonuses 1 where possible. Opportunities should be provided for the staff to attend seminars, workshops and any events which will contribute to their coaching knowledge and professional development. Opportunities for the above activities should be provided locally and nationally. The Head-Coach should keep well-informed about all developments in every area of the sport.

Notes:

1 “fringe benefits” and bonuses – дополнительные льготы и премии.

Text C

Writing a Resume

Applicant’s resume is his calling card. The way it looks and reads is a reflection of the applicant. So it should be attractive and well written and look professional.

It has only seconds to make an impression. It should be simple, written in short phrases. Only the facts relevant to the objective should be listed. But in the attempt to be brief an applicant shouldn’t leave out any information that shows that he is qualified for the job.

The opening section of a resume should show at a glance who the applicant is, how to reach him and what kind of job he is interested in.

His resume should state in one or two short, clear phrases the job or career objective. To be selected an applicant should:

summarize his strongest qualifications and say when he will be available;

describe his education, work experience, activities and achievements;

note any awards he has received;

list anything else that might make him attractive to employers, for example, if he speaks, reads and/or writes foreign languages;

noteusefulworkskillssuchasoperatingacomputer,wordprocessor or other equipment;

not forget to give the names of three to five people who can confirm his abilities and personal characteristics.
