Упражнение 9.

pass on (x 2) / listen in / leave out / go into / take back

Gossiping is one of those strange things in life - most people do it, or have done it, but most people also agree that they don't like it if people gossip about them. If we hear our name mentioned, or the name of someone we know, we usually can't stop ourselves from listening in . And, if we overhear something interesting, we pass the information on to our friends and colleagues. Of course, we recognize that the information is private or personal, and so we begin by saying things like, "Now don't tell anyone, but I heard that ...", or "This is strictly between us. ...", but this doesn't stop us from going into every embarrassing detail of the story - we even add parts to the story to make it more interesting! We also recognize that the information may not be true by saying things like, "Apparently, ..." or, "According to John, ....". This way, if anyone asks us to take back the things we have said, we can say, "I didn't say it was true, I was just passing on what I heard."

Perhaps a safer way of gossiping would be to leave out the name of the person it's about, but if we did that it wouldn't be very interesting, would it?

Last Saturday, Dr.Grammar decided to go to the beach with his girlfriend. As you probably know, Britain is not famous for its sunny, dry weather, so Dr.Grammar wanted to use this opportunity to … some sunshine, and improve his suntan.

Dr.Grammar has very pale skin because he lives in Britain, and because he spends most of his time indoors reading grammar books. Luckily, his girlfriend is a very practical woman and she brought some suntan lotion with her, to prevent them both from getting sun burnt. After she had … some of the lotion … Dr.Grammar's back, he … and started to read his grammar books (he's obsessed!). But after a while he got very hot and decided to go for a swim to cool down.

However, he forgot to reapply more suntan lotion, which had been … by the sea. It only took about 20 minutes for his back to get very burnt. He … a T-shirt … and sat on his towel, watching the other people on the beach. Just as a couple of rather attractive women were walking past, Dr.Grammar's girlfriend opened her eyes. Although she is practical, she is also rather jealous, so she slapped Dr.Grammar on the back and told him to stop … the women … . She was surprised when Dr.Grammar screamed, until (after he stopped crying) he showed her how burnt his back was. Despite seeing his very red back, which had a white hand-print in the middle of it, she was not sympathetic - as she said, it would teach him either to remember to use suntan lotion, or to avoid … women!

Many jobs require creativity, but it can often be difficult to … good ideas … when they are needed.
