Упражнение 1. Переведите словосочетания на английский язык.

  13. Этот клиент часто жалуется администратору гостиницы на плохое обслуживание. This customer often complaints to the manager of the hotel about bad service.

  14. Нужно предупредить Буратино о том, что кот Базилио и лиса Алиса ведут себя нечестно по отношению к нему. It is necessary to warn Buratino (that) Basilio the cat and Alice the fox are dishonest to him.

  15. Он часто жалуется на головные боли. He often complains of headaches.

  16. Ты слишком много смотришь телевизор. Я уже подумываю о его продаже. You watch too much TV. I’m already thinking of selling it.

  17. Мы редко получаем известия от Джейн. We seldom hear from Jane.

A. Change the following words into other parts of speech using the same suffixes in each group.

a) verb  noun  adjective: decorate- decoration – decorative, demonstrate, penetrate (проникать), deteriorate (ухудшать), generate (порождать), federate (объединяться), investigate

B. Translate into English paying attention to comparative constructions.

C. Translate into English paying attention to quantifiers.

Упражнение 1. В этом задании даны определения фразовых глаголов, которые описаны в теории. Вот только самих глаголов вместе с предлогами в них нет. Ваша задача – расставить их по местам. Количество пропусков совпадает с количеством пропущенных слов.

  19. To … come across… something means to find it by chance.

  20. To …make something …out means to manage to see, read or hear it.

  21. To … look through… something means to examine or read it quickly.

  22. To …let somebody …down means to fail to help or support them as they had hoped or expected.

  23. To … give up… means to stop trying to do something.

  24. To … break out… means to start suddenly (of war, fighting or other unpleasant events).

  25. To …tell someone …off means to speak angrily to them for doing something wrong.

  26. To …take someone …off means to copy his or her voice, actions or manner in an amusing way.

  27. To …make for … means to move towards something, or move in particular direction.

  28. To …look after … somebody means to be responsible for or take care of them.

  29. To … break down… means to stop working because of a fault ( of a machine or vehicle).

  30. To …bring somebody …up means to care for a child, teaching him or her how to behave.

  31. To … take up… something means to start a new activity.

  32. To … get over… something means to return to your usual state of health, happiness etc. after an illness, a shock, the end of a relationship etc.

  33. To … fall behind… somebody means to fail to keep level with them.

  34. To … put off… something means to change it to a later time or date.

  35. To …make something …up means to invent a story or an explanation in order to deceive somebody.

Упражнение 4. На этот раз недостающими деталями будут глаголы. Поскольку глаголами мы еще вплотную не занимались, в трудных местах (где требуется герундий или причастие) есть подсказки. В остальных предложениях все просто. Выбор между простым настоящим, голым инфинитивом и простым прошедшим за вами.

Упражнение 6. Переведите на английский язык предложения, содержащие фразовые глаголы.

а) take

1. Он всегда поражает нас своим воображением. He always takes us aback by his imagination.

2. Не пытайся обмануть меня. Don’t try to take me in.

3. Подождите, я запишу ваш адрес и телефон. Wait a little, I’ll take down your address and telephone number.

4. Мы не можем принять на работу еще одного сотрудника. We can’t take on another employee.

5. Извините, вы, наверное, перепутали меня с кем-то. Sorry, perhaps you took me for someone else.

6. Жираф хочет заняться гольфом. The giraffe wants to take up golf.

7. На кого ты похож? – На маму. Who do you take after? – Mother

8. Я сразу почувствовал симпатию к гному. I immediately fell for the dwarf.

9. Самолет взлетел, и все вздохнули с облегчением. The plane took off and everyone sighed with relief.

б) put

1. Мы отложили поездку до следующего понедельника. We put off the trip till next Monday.

2. Не одевай пальто. На улице очень тепло. Don’t put on the coat. It’s very warm outside.

3. Людоед запер чулан (larder) и спрятал ключ в карман. The ogre locked the larder and put the key away into his pocket.

4. Они так жарко спорили, что я не мог вставить и слова. They were arguing so violently that I couldn’t put in a word.

5. Соедините меня с отделом продаж, пожалуйста. Put me through to the Sales Department, please.

6. Дракон потушил свой огонь и выдохнул дым. The Dragon put out his fire and breathed out smoke.

7. Я не буду мириться с плохим поведением жирафа. I am not going to put up with the giraffe’s bad behaviour.

8. Кот Базилио выдвинул прекрасную идею о том, как обмануть Буратино. Basilio the cat put forward a brilliant idea how to take Buratino in.

9. Гном хочет купить лодку. Он уже отложил 100 долларов. The dwarf wants to buy a boat. He has already put by a hundred dollars.

10. Мы не сможем купить этот дом, потому что хозяева подняли цену. We can’t afford this house as the owners have put the price up.

в) get

1. Как у вашей дочери успехи в школе? How is your daughter getting on at school?

2. Муравьи с трудом переправились через ручей (stream). The ants got across the stream with difficulty./ had difficulty getting across..

3. Что-то дети притихли. Не шалят ли они? The children are being silent. They are not getting up to something, are they?

4. Наконец я дозвонился до справочной службы (referral service). In the end I got through to the referral service.

5. Дети быстро оправляются от шока. У них хорошая нервная система. Children get over shock quickly. They have a good nervous system.

6. Мы никак не можем ужиться с новыми соседями. We can’t get on with our new neighbours.

7. Папа Карло был очень беден, но как-то сводил концы с концами. Father Carlo was very poor but he got by somehow.

г) look

1. Карабас-Барабас искал золотой ключик. C.B was looking for the golden key.

2. Поищи в справочнике телефоны модельных агентств. Look up the numbers of model agencies in the directory.

3. Я восхищаюсь такими писателями, как Борис Акунин. I look up to writers like B.A.

4. Преподаватель просмотрел реферат (paper) и положил его в стол. The teacher looked through the paper and put it into the drawer.

5. На что вы смотрите? What are you looking at?
