Seabed Analysis

Changing Seabed Classification Scale

It is possible to modify the display scale of the Seabed graphic from the palette using any tool selected from the Toolbar.

Several methods can be used to modify the Seabed Classification Graphic scale

Using fixed scale

1.Right click any where in the Seabed Classification palette

2.Choose "Graph size" and click on an item between smallest, smaller, medium, larger and largest.

Modifying the scale ratio

1.Right click any where in the Seabed Classification palette

2.Choose "User Scale" to open dialog which allows you to modify the display ratio between E1 (Roughness) and E2 (Hardness).

Enter the E1 and E2 interval of value to redraw the Seabed Classification garphic's mark.

Activate the track

To activate tracking on :

Right-click on the Seabed Classification Palette to display the Graph and right-click again and choose the Track on item.

Select then "Show Selection" allows you to display and follow up simultaneously the boat track in on the Seabed Classification Graph and on the chart.

Seabed classification preferences

In order to obtain the best results, it is necessary to configure the Ground discrimination system depending on the type of sounder, water salinity, etc..

The software allows you to define as many configurations as necessary and use them when required.

IMPORTANT - When you change the configuration, the new configuration is automatically applied to the current track . The previously recorded tracks are not modified with respect to the new Ground discrimination system configuration (see paragraph Applying a configuration to a track to adapt the display of a previously recorded track to the new configuration).

Click on preferences button P located in the upper right-hand corner of the Seabed class box to open the configuration dialog box.

Configuring a Seabed classification

The Seabed Classification window enables personal configuration of seabed file managing.

Using Seabed configuration

Saving a Seabed configuration:

When you define a new seabed configuration you should save it with a new file name. It will be easy to load it again in the future.

To save, click on the Save button, the configuration will be saved in the "My documents" folder and the file extension is (*.rox)

Opening a personal Seabed configuration:

In case you want to open a personal Seabed configuration, which is stored in "My Documents" folder click on Open button.

This opens the "file open" dialog box and can be used to load a previously saved configuration.

Modifying the size of a selected zone

302

Seabed Analysis

Click on a zone to select it.

Then click the upper left-hand corner or the lower right-hand corner of the selected zone and drag the mouse to modify the size of the zone.

Note:

by clicking this zone, you move it into the foreground.

Be careful Zones should not overlap. If the modifying zone covers other zones the visible zone becomes prioritary.

Modifying the zone name

Click the zone to select it and then enter the new name in the Title box.

Modifying the color of the zone

Click the zone to select it then call up the color pop-up menu.

Erasing a zone

Click the zone to select it, then select Erase from the Edit menu.

Creating a zone

Click outside of the existing zone. Next, drag the mouse holding its button down to define the new zone. Then, enter the associated parameters (name, color) as explained above.

Note: 16 zones max can be created.

Displaying the selection

If points to which (E1/E2) information is associated are selected on the chart, a "S" button appears in the upper left corner Ground discrimination palette

303

MaxSea Operator Manual version 12.6

Click the Selection display (S) button to display the points selected in the dialog box.

Click on the mouse to interrupt the simulation.

Note : Preferences are always saved when exiting and restored during exit launch cycle.

"Engineer" adjustment dialog box

Click the Settings button in the Seabed Classification dialog to open the Seabed class "Engineer" adjustment dialog box (for more information see your Ground discrimination system manual before filling items).

The Seabed Class dialog box appears and then inform the required items:

1 - "Apply depth correction" option is selected

The frequency and the sound speed fields are filled. The following calculation which is applied on the displayed depth value is:

(Displayed Depth value ) = (Entered Depth value ) X (propagation speed of sound / (2 X selected frequency ))

2 - "Apply E1/E2 correction" option is selected

Enter a maximum depth value and The following calculation is applied:

If the (Depth value >= entered LMax value) then (Displayed E1 value ) = (Entered E1 value ) X (Depth value / LMax value)

or

304

Seabed Analysis

If the (Depth value <= entered LMax value) then (Displayed E2 value ) = (Entered E2 value ) X (Depth value / LMax value)

3 -"Apply display law" option is selected

by default this option allows a calculation on E1 and E2 to improve the display in the 2D view.

Then to allow the calculation you have to click on OK.

IMPORTANT - The calculation is available on the display and not on the recorded values. The data values are saved in the database without the Display Law correction. The display law is applied dynamically during the display process. This will allow you to change the display law or to share there Hardness / roughness database more easily. Be careful, an old Hardness/Roughness databases from a previous version are Not available if the "display law" was applied.

Applying a configuration to a track

Choose the required current configuration as explained above.

1.Right-click on the track that you wish to apply the current configuration.

2.Choose Select and click on Line under the contextual menu to select all the track on the chart.

3.Then select [Edit Track Line] from the [Edit] menu.

4.In the Change the track parameters zone in the upper part of the dialog box, select Track color (and optionally the line thickness).

5.Check the Variable color box and the select the Edit color range button from the Track color zone, then call up the pop-up menu and select (E1/E2) as the new display parameter. Finally, click OK to validate.

6.The selected track display is modified depending on the current E1/E2 configuration.

Trawl Positioning

Dead Reckoning Trawl Positioning

This function is used for testing trawl positioning when trawl positioning system are not connected.

User knows the wire length and the depth where the Engin is supposed to be. Always have an estimation of the trawl position displayed on your screen. It is less accurate than dedicated trawl door positioning systems but it is a good value solution. Reduce the risk of loosing or damaging your trawl. Fish with more precision and as close as possible to dangerous, but full of fish, areas.

Setting up the simulated Trawl positioning

1.Go to the [utilities] menu and choose [Data Input / Output Settings...]

2.Click on Trawl tab and Add Instrument button

3.Check Simulated in "Add a connection to an instrument" and click Next

4.Draw Engin is selected and click Next to finish

How to Determine Trawl Positioning Parameters

1.Go to the [Display] on menu bar and choose [Manual Trawl Positionning]

2.Enter the Wire length as shown on following example 900m is chosen (1500m by default and you can choose value from 0 to 99999,99)

3.Enter the Wire tension as shown on following example 70%is chosen (70% by default choose value from 10% to100% )

4.Enter an estimated depth as 10m for example (500m by default choose value from 0 to 10000)

5.Check display for showing the Trawl engine drawn in the Depth Profile window selected on MaxSea Mode.

6.Click Apply to confirm.

MaxSea displays the estimated trawl position

MaxSea has developed a technology which provides the estimated fishing gear position. This function is mainly designed for trawlers (pelagic or bottom trawler). Always have an estimation of the trawl position displayed on your screen. Reduce the risk of loosing or damaging your trawl.

Fish with more precision and as close as possible to dangerous, but full of fish, areas.

The trawl is displayed as a half circle located behind the boat based on COG. (as shown in Fig.1)

The trawl is shown on the cartography and in the profile window (not in 3D).(as shown in Fig.2)

It is less accurate than dedicated trawl door positioning systems but it is a good value solution.

To modify Parameters:

1.Select the [Manual Trawl Positioning] from the [Display] menu

2.Enter the rope length, in our example the chosen value is 900meters (1500 m selected value by default)

3.Enter the estimated depth, in our example the chosen value is 70% (70% selected value by default)

4.Enter the rope tension, in our example the chosen value is 10meters (500 m selected value by default)

Note : message error dialog will warn you for wrong values.
