WRITING

Fliers

Fliers were the dominant form of advertising in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Fliers are external correspondence sent to prospective or existing customers. Fliers, usually limited to one, very specific topic, highlight a way in which you or your company can meet a customer’s unique needs.

XXI. Study the samples of standard full color fliers carefully. From the list given below choose the criteria for fliers writing.

Criteria for fliers

1. Limit the length to one page (8½ x 11).

2. Focus on one specific idea. Consider a technical description/specification.

3. Include a table of contents to help your readers find information.

4. Include a title at the top to attract your reader’s interest!

5. Each step should have specificity of detail for clarity.

6. Include the contact information: street address, e-mail address, phone number, and/or fax.

7. Limit your text. As with all good technical writing, text should be short.

8. Increase your font size in order your reader to see the key points at a glance.

9. Create the signature lines tell readers who you are.

10. An effective document will also contain an Introduction, a Body, and a Conclusion.

11. Use graphics. Let a picture emphasize your key point and draw the reader’s attention.

12. Use color.

XXII. Create your own flier. Choose the topic from the list below and follow the instructions from Ex.XXI.

  • Machines (Industrial Technology)

  • Scientific or historical invention (History and Science)

  • Seminar or conference (Training and Education)

  • Communication (Information Technology)

XXIII. You are a computer service technician and an active participant of Technical Support Forums. Write a response to the following problems dealing with computers.

1. I can’t open the attachment.

2. There is no power.

3. My computer is too slow.

4. Downloads are taking forever.

5. Google doesn’t look right.

UNIT 4

COMPUTERS AND AVIATION

I. Work in pairs. Make a list of possible application of computers in aviation. Compare it with your groupmates.

II. Match the pictures with the appropriate captions and discuss the importance of the events.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

a) Melba Roy headed the group of NASA mathematicians, known as "computers," who tracked the Echo satellites in the 1960s. The group's computations helped to produce the orbital element timetables by which millions could view the satellite from Earth as it passed overhead.

b) Computer Update Equipment (CUE) provided automatic distribution of flight-plan data to air traffic controllers beginning in the early 1970s.

c) Wind tunnel facilities often employed groups of women whose job was to perform mathematical calculations relating to airflow. They were euphemistically referred to as "female computers."

d) This photo, taken in 1949 in the Engine Research Building at NACA's Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory, is an early analog computing machine.

e) Three views of supersonic transport (SST) configuration drawn entirely by a computer. Such analytical techniques proved inadequate for "off design" portions of the SST mission, such as stability under various aerodynamic forces. Wind tunnel testing was necessary.
