The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and about five thousands five hundred smaller islands. The seas surrounding Great Britain are shallow and rich in fish. The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scot­land and Northern Ireland. The climate in Britain is generally mild and temperate because of the Gulf Stream, which brings warm water and air across the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico.

The English are famous for their weather as it is very changeable, never the same two days running. It is natural for them to use the comparison “as changeable as the weather” of a person who often changes his mood or opinion about something.

Many people travel to Britain to discover new things, way of life, to meet people. People usually travel there by plane, by boat or by coach. Travelling by plane is the fastest and the most convenient way. When you reach your place of destination in a few hours you realize all the advantages of travelling by air.

In big cities there are a lot of good hotels. Still, if you do not want to get disappointed, it is advisable to book accommoda­tion beforehand by fax or telephone, especially if you are visiting the town during the summer months. If you do not book accommodation beforehand, you may have to leave the hotel because it is fully booked up. In the same building there are also restaurants, bars, cafete­rias. British restaurants are not famous for their good food. Sometimes they offer only sausages and chips, fish and chips — chips with everything in fact. But there is a variety of restaurants of all nationalities in London and some other towns where you can choose food to your taste: Itali­an, French, Chinese, Russian and other restaurants.
