9. Underline the word that best completes each phrase

1) It’ll be a (cool, cold, warm) day in hell before we invite him to the movies again.

Speak test

In this test, you’ll be able to demonstrate how well you speak English. There are several different sections in the test, and special directions will be given for each section. The entire test will last approximately 20 minutes.

As you speak, your voice will be recorded. Your score for the test will be based on what is on the tape. Be sure to speak loudly enough for the machine to record clearly what you say.

Your tape-recorder should now be running and recording. Do not stop your tape recorder at any time during the test.

Section 1. Directions

In this action of the test you will be asked to answer some questions about yourself. After each question, you will have a short time to answer the question. Be sure to speak clearly after you hear each question.

Section 2. Directions

In this section you will be asked to read a printed paragraph aloud. You will be scored for proper pronunciation and clear speech. First, you will be given one minute to read the paragraph silently to yourself. Then, you will have one minute to read the paragraph aloud. Go on to the next page and begin reading the paragraph silently to yourself.

E.g. During cold winter, people must be extra careful to prevent excessive exposure to cold and serious loss of body heat. Layers of relatively light, loose clothing give better protection than one thick, heavy item. etc. ...

Section 3. Directions

In this section, you will see partial sentences and will be asked to make complete sentences using these parts. Look at Example Õ.

Example Õ: When the library opens... . There are a number of possible completions for this sentence. You could say for e.g.

When the library opens, I’ll return the book OR

When the library opens, I’ll go there to study

When the library opens, I’ll look for a new novel

These are only sample completions. There are many other possibilities. You may complete each sentence in any way you wish. Try to make the completed sentence meaningful and grammatically correct.

Now, complete the ten partial sentences. Speak when you hears the number and be sure to say the complete sentence.

Section 4. Directions

In this section you will see a series of pictures that tell a continuous story about what happened one day last month. You will be asked to tell the story that the pictures show. First, please study each if the following pictures silently, beginning with picture number one and going through picture number six.

Section 5. Directions

In this section, you will look at a picture and answer a number of questions about the picture. First, study the picture below silently.

Section 6. Directions

In this section, you will be asked to give your opinion on topics of international interest and to describe certain objects. Be sure to say as much as you can in the time allotted for each questions. Remember that this is simply a test of spoken English. When it is graded, the graders will be interested in the way you express your ideas, not the actual ideas. There will be no sample questions for this section.

Section 7. Directions

In this section of the test, you will see a class schedule and you will be asked to explain this schedule. Imagine that you are a teacher meeting your class for the first time. You must explain this schedule to your students. Be sure to include all important details in your description. You will have one minute to study the schedule silently.
