      1. It consists of an ink duct or ink fountain, a doctor blade, a plate cylinder, an impression cylinder, and obviously the material to be printed on. The plate cylinder is provided with a copper layer or shell, in which little engraved cells are made. These cells have to be provided with ink. This can be done in several ways. The plate cylinder could rotate in the ink duct, but it also occurs that the plate cylinder is sprayed with ink, or is provided with ink by the form rollers. After the process of inking, there is ink not only on the engraved cells, but also in other places outside these cells. For that reason excess ink is scraped off by a doctor blade. The paper web is wound off the roll and carried through the printing unit, in between plate and impression cylinders.

      1. A thin strip made of steel used to regulate ink flow on flexographic and gravure press.

Simple printing method and press High cost of plates or cylinders mechanism Web-fed gravure viable only for

Can maintain consistent colour long runs (300,000 +)

High speed Colour correction and last-minute

Straightforward drying by evaporation corrections difficult and expensive

Good results obtainable on cheaper paper Proofing expensive
