Функции герундия в предложении

Когда предлог отсутствует: I. Подлежащее
Measuring this distance is difficult.	Измерить(измерение) это расстояние трудно.
II. Именная часть сказуемого
Our aim was measuring the distance.	Нашей целью было измерение расстояния.
III. Часть составного глагольного сказуемого после глаголов: to begin, to start, to go on, to continue, to enjoy, to finish, to stop, can't help, etc.
He began measuring this distance.	Он начал измерять (измерение) это расстояние.
IV. Прямое дополнение после глаголов: to want, to like, to prefer, to avoid, to insist (on), to rely (on), to depend (on), to remember, to mind, to excuse, to mention, etc.
Do you mind our measuring this distance?	Ты не возражаешь, если мы измерим это расстояние?

Когда предлог присутствует: V. Определение с предлогами of, for, in.
There are different ways of solving this problem.	Существуют различные способы решения этой задачи.
VI. Обстоятельство с предлогами on, after, before, without, by, etc.
On finding the mistake he had to repeat the experiment.	Найдясвою ошибку, он вынужден был повторить эксперимент.
He improved his article by changing the end.	Он исправил свою статью, изменив конец.

Сложный герундиальный оборот

Герундиальный оборот с предшествующим притяжательным местоимением или существительным в притяжательном падеже обычно переводится на русский язык придаточным предложением, вводимым словами что; чтобы; то что; того что; в том что. Существительное или местоимение, стоящее перед герундием, становится в русском предложении подлежащим придаточного предложения, а герундий - сказуемым. Например:

We know of our teacher giving a consultation twice a week.

Мы знаем, что наш преподаватель дает консультации два раза в неделю.

Герундий в страдательном залоге часто переводится на русский язык глаголом-сказуемым в неопределенно-личном предложении:

We knew nothing of his being appointed to a new job.

Мы ничего не знали о том, что его назначили на новую работу.
