Vladimir State University (its history, and Faculties)

Vladimir State University is one of the biggest higher schools in the central region of Russia. It is known for the high standards of teaching and research. It began its history as a branch of the Moscow Institute of Electro-mechanical engineering in 1958. In 1964 it was renamed into Vladimir Polytechnical Institute. In 1993 it was given the status of a technical university. When the faculty of Liberal Arts was established, the technical university turned into a classical one. It happened in 1996. Since then some new faculties have appeared. They are the faculty of Law and Social Sciences including the departments of History, Religion Science, Sociology and some others. The above faculties were added to the original ones: the faculty of Physics, Radio-Electronics and Medical Equipment, the faculty of Information Technologies, the faculty of Automotive Transport, the Mechanical Technological faculty, the faculty of Chemistry and Ecology, the faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the faculty of Economics. All these faculties occupy four large buildings on the territory of the campus. There is one more faculty which is housed in a separate building of the 19 th century located in the very centre of the city. This faculty is called the Institute of Small and Medium Business.
