Translation.

Born to shop

Food and fashion are two things Italians produce better than almost any other country in the world, yet when it comes to buying either of them online, they are far behind western Europe and the US. While e-commerce continue to grow rapidly, with European sales totalling 50 billion last year, Italians still remain largely unconvinced of the advantages of buying online.

According to the Mediascope Europe Study by the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA), Italian shoppers bought an average of just three items on the internet in 2005. This compares to 12 items bought by UK shoppers, who top the league for online shopping, and an average of six items bought by shoppers in the rest of Europe. Most of the goods bought by Italians online were tickets, CDs, DVDs and books. Clothes and food don’t even make an appearance in the top-ten list of online purchases.

So why are Italians so reluctant to shop online? One reason is the lack of social relationship between buyer and seller on the internet. The social interaction involved in face-to-face commerce is still important to Italians, even in the big cities. Knowing the shop owner, having a chat, being given help and advice in deciding what to buy, and asking for a discount are all part of the experience. The personal touch is extremely important. Learning to wait patiently to be served while your neighbourhood shop owner finishes a very long conversation with the person in front of you is a necessary skill if you live in Italy.

It’s not surprising, then, that the mail-order business never took off in Italy. For Italians, getting that must-have jacket, bag or watch delivered straight to the door just isn’t the same as going into the shop to buy it. It’s hard, for example, to imagine a typical fashionista in Milan buying her shoes online, robbing herself of the pleasure of walking down the street, carrying a shopping bag with a designer logo on it. Even after three years of living in Milan, I have yet to meet one person who buys clothes or regularly shops for food online.

Another problem for online buyers is payment over the internet. Italians do not really trust Web-based transactions. Although established sites like eBay have been a great success, many people still refuse to use their credit cards on the Web, especially when buying expensive items. They fear they may have difficulties getting their money back if there are problems with the goods. In an attempt to encourage spending, many online companies offer a cash-on-delivery service, which is now the second most popular method of payment.

But while most Italians do not buy food or fashion online, other types of e-commerce are finally taking off, especially online travel agencies as well as e-banking and finance.
