3. Our Institute

My name is Peter Volkov. I am eighteen years old and I am a first-student. I study at the Komi State Teachers’ Training Institute at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. I am a student of the Department of Physics and Informatics.

Our Institute is the oldest higher educational institution in the Komi Republic. It was founded in 1932. On the first floor of the main building there is a museum, which contains a lot of exhibits about the history of the Institute.

Our Institute is situated in the centre of Syktyvkar in Communist Street. It consists of three buildings. There are six full-time faculties in our Institute. They are – the Faculty of Biology and Geography, the Faculty of Industry and Technology, the Faculty of Elementary Education, the Faculty of Foreign Languages, the Philological Faculty and the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. Besides there are three extramural faculties.

Every higher educational institution is headed by a rector. Our rector is … . prorectors are in charge of the academic and scientific work. The faculties are headed by deans. The head of our faculty is … .

I study in the largest and the main building. Our faculty is on the first floor. There are many class-rooms, studies, laboratories and lecture-halls in this building. On the ground floor there is a security post, a large cloak-room and some class-rooms. To the left there is a library and a reading-hall, to the right there is a health-centre. The Faculty of Biology and Geography is situated on the second and the third floors. Besides there we have a gymnasium and an assembly hall.

I enjoy studying at the Teachers’ Training Institute. I am going to be a teacher of Physics. To my mind, teaching is a very noble profession.

4. Our institute

Every year thousands of young men and women enter Universities and Institutes of Higher Education in Russia. To become a student they have to take entry competition.

As for me I study at the Komi Teacher's Training Institute. I am a first-year student and I am specializing in Russian and Literature. I have a calling for these two subjects that's why I study at the Philological Faculty. I am a full-time student but there is a correspondence department too.

Our Institute is the oldest educational establishment in the Komi Republic. Its history dates back from February, 1932. On the 50-th anniversary it was awarded the Badge of Honour.

There are six faculties at our Institute: the Faculty of Philology; the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics; the Faculty of Geography and Biology; the Faculty of Foreign Languages; the Faculty of Technology and Enterprise; the Faculty of Teaching Methods in Primary School.

The Institute trains teachers for primary and secondary schools. The curriculum consists of social, educational and special subjects.

The Institute course lasts 5 years. The academic year is divided into two terms. Each term ends with the examination session. Students have holidays twice a year, at the end of each set of examinations. Those who pass the exams and credit tests successfully get a scholarship. Besides we get some financial support from our parents.

A lot of people work at our Institute. The Rector is the head of the Institute. Besides there are some vice-rectors, deans, subdeans and heads of departments. Professors and lecturers give us interesting lectures on different subjects. All students study some foreign languages. As for me I study English. On graduating we receive diplomas which give us the right to teach at school.

I devote much time to my studies and try not to miss classes because I want to get the teacher's certificate and to become a good teacher in future.
