1. Our Institute

Our Institute was founded on the 21^st of February 1932. In 2012 it will celebrate its 80^th Anniversary. On this occasion it was awarded the order of “Sigh of Honour”. There are six faculties at our Institute – the faculty of philology, of mathematics and physics, of geography and biology, the faculty of foreign languages, the industrial faculty and the faculty of methods of teaching in junior school. Most of the faculties have a 5-year course of studies. When the students graduate from the Institute they go to different schools as teachers.

At the Institute students study different subjects – social and special; they attend lectures and do a lot of practical and lab work. Many students join scientific societies and amateur groups. There is a special faculty at the Institute where students get additional professions necessary at school.

Students study a foreign language at each faculty either English or German or French.

As all the students in our country the students of our Institute have 2 terms each year – the autumn term and the spring term. Each term ends with examinations and after them students have their holidays. There are winter holidays lasting for 2 weeks and summer holidays lasting for 2 months. In summer many students of the Institute take part in different construction teams.

Classes at our Institute begin at 8.15 and end 3.35 p.m. Students have 3 or 4 lectures and seminars every day except Sunday. On Sunday they have a rest. Our Institute has a good library and 2 reading-halls. Our Institute has 5 hostels for students so they have good conditions to live and study well.

2. Our Institute

My name is Peter Volkov. I am eighteen years old and I am a first-student. I study at the Komi State Teachers’ Training Institute at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. I am a student of the Department of Physics and Informatics.

Our Institute is the oldest higher educational institution in the Komi Republic. It was founded in 1932. On the first floor of the main building there is a museum, which contains a lot of exhibits about the history of the Institute.

Our Institute is situated in the centre of Syktyvkar in Communist Street. It consists of three buildings. There are six full-time faculties in our Institute. They are – the Faculty of Biology and Geography, the Faculty of Industry and Technology, the Faculty of Elementary Education, the Faculty of Foreign Languages, the Philological Faculty and the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.

Every higher educational institution is headed by a rector. Prorectors are in charge of the academic and scientific work. The faculties are headed by deans.

I study in the largest and the main building. Our faculty is on the first floor. There are many class-rooms, studies, laboratories and lecture-halls in this building. On the ground floor there is a security post, a large cloak-room and some class-rooms. To the left there is a library and a reading-hall, to the right there is a health-centre. The Faculty of Biology and Geography is situated on the second and the third floors. Besides there we have a gymnasium and an assembly hall.

I enjoy studying at the Teachers’ Training Institute. I am going to be a teacher of Physics. To my mind, teaching is a very noble profession.
